Marco Stefano Belinelli (born March 25, 1986 in San Giovanni in Persiceto , Province of Bologna ) is an Italian basketball player who is currently active in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs .

Career

Italy

Belinelli began his career in the first team of Virtus Bologna shortly after his 16th birthday. After winning the Italian championship in 2003, the club ran into financial difficulties and Belinelli moved to city rivals Fortitudo . There he got more and more playing time in the Italian championship, the final of which he reached every time in his first three years at Fortitudo and which he won in 2005, as well as in the EuroLeague , where he was used in the 2004 final . In the 2005/06 season he developed into a top performer and was able to further expand his points yield in Serie A in the following year.

NBA

In the NBA Draft 2007 Belinelli was selected in 18th place by the Golden State Warriors and impressed in the NBA Summer League with his performances. Although he still had a contract with Fortitudo until 2008, the Warriors reached an agreement with the Italian club and announced Belinelli's move to the NBA on July 16. While he was little used in his first season, he secured a place in the main lineup of the Warriors towards the end of 2008. On July 30, 2009 he was swapped for Devean George to the Toronto Raptors , but moved to the New Orleans Hornets a year later .

In the summer of 2012, he signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls . Despite the absence of star player Derrick Rose , the Bulls made it to the Conference semi-finals, where they were defeated by the eventual champions Miami Heat . Belinelli then moved to last year's finalist, the San Antonio Spurs . As part of the All-Star Weekend 2014 , he won the three-point competition , and at the end of the 2013/14 season , Belinelli won the NBA championship with the Spurs.

After his contract with the Spurs expired, Belinelli moved within the NBA to the Sacramento Kings and signed a contract there until 2018. After just one season, he was transferred to the Charlotte Hornets . After the end of the 2016/17 season, he was transferred to the Atlanta Hawks on June 20, 2017 together with Miles Plumlee against Dwight Howard .

National team

At the 2006 World Cup , Bellinelli's first major tournament in the Italian senior team , he was the team's top scorer and scored 25 points against the USA alone . He was also Italy's best points collector at the 2007 European Championships , but the team did not reach the quarter-finals, also because Belinelli missed the decisive game against Germany in the middle of the second quarter and was only used again in the last quarter. Even so, Belinelli got 25 points and was the best player of the game. He also took part in the European Championships in 2011 and 2013 .
