The New Orleans Pelicans are a team of the North American professional basketball league NBA . The home is the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans , Louisiana . The team plays in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference .

The Pelicans were founded as New Orleans Hornets for the 2002/03 season when the then Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans.

The flooding of New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina forced the Hornets to move to another city in the 2005-06 season . 35 home games as well as training took place in Oklahoma City . The official name of the team for this season and the following was New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets . At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , the team returned to New Orleans, where it again played all 41 home games in the New Orleans Arena.

In April 2013, the management changed its name to “Pelicans” ( pelicans ), as the fan base could not identify with the name “Hornets” ( hornets ) brought from Charlotte . The Early Years in New Orleans (2002-2005)

The Hornets opened their first season in New Orleans on October 30, 2002 against the former New Orleans franchise, the Utah Jazz . In the first NBA game in New Orleans in 17 years, they defeated the Jazz 100-75, while the jersey with the number 7 was retired by "Pistol" Pete Maravich at half-time . Despite Baron Davis ' agonizing injuries, the Hornets ended the season on a 47:35 record, allowing the franchise to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth time in a row. There it was defeated by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round .

After the season, the team unexpectedly sacked their head coach Paul Silas and replaced him with Tim Floyd . The 2003/04 season began the team strong with a 17: 7 record, subsided and ended the season 41:41, which they just missed the home advantage in the first round of the playoffs, where they met the Miami Heat. Hurricane Katrina and the move to Oklahoma City (2005–2007)

Due to the catastrophic devastation in southeast Louisiana from Hurricane Katrina , the Hornets temporarily moved to Oklahoma City ( 2005/06 - 2006/07 ). During this time the franchise was called "New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets". For those two seasons, the majority of home games were played at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, while some games continued to be played at the New Orleans Arena . Her training facility was the Sawyer Center on the Southern Nazarene University campus during her time in Oklahoma City. However, the team's training camp took place in 2006 at their training ground, the Alario Center in Westwego, Louisiana.

With the fourth pick in the 2005 NBA Draft , the Hornets chose Chris Paul as a future All-Star. In the 2005/06 season , the team played 36 games in Oklahoma City, one at the Lloyd Noble Center on the University of Oklahoma campus due to a conflict with the Ford Center , three games in New Orleans and one at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the campus of Louisiana State University . The team started the 2005-06 season better than expected, even after backup center Chris Andersen was given a two-year ban for drug use. It seemed like the team was using this as motivation and briefly held sixth place in the west. Ultimately, they lost twelve of 13 games, which they fell out of the playoff places. During this time, they set a negative NBA record when they only made 16 points in the second half against the Los Angeles Clippers . After the season, the Hornets made big changes to the roster in hopes that they would make the Western Conference playoffs for the first time . So they traded J. R. Smith and P. J. Brown to the Chicago Bulls for Tyson Chandler . They also had Speedy Claxton sign with the Atlanta Hawks and filled the backup point guard position with free agents Bobby Jackson and Jannero Pargo . Furthermore, Peja Stojaković signed from the Indiana Pacers in New Orleans.

The franchise chose to stay in Oklahoma City for the 2006/07 season , promising to return to New Orleans as early as possible in 2007. This season the Hornets played 35 home games in Oklahoma, six in New Orleans and ended the season with a 39:43 record, one more win than in the previous season.

The successful operation in Oklahoma City contributed to the fact that the city was chosen as the new home of the Seattle SuperSonics in the season 2008/09 (see Oklahoma City Thunder ).

Back in The Big Easy (2007-2010)

For the 2007/08 season , the Hornets returned completely to New Orleans, so that all 41 home games could be played in the New Orleans Arena . League officials had emphasized at the beginning of the return of the franchise as soon as it was feasible to help rebuild it. That is why the 2008 NBA All-Star Game and the associated celebrations were awarded to New Orleans and a major marketing campaign was started in February 2007. However, the season was like a roller coaster and in April it was clear that the balance of 56:26 from the previous season in the 2008/09 season was unattainable. The reason for this was mainly the injury problems of Tyson Chandler and Peja Stojaković . The Hornets ended the season with a disappointing 49:33 record, which meant fourth place in the division and seventh place in the conference. In the first round of the playoffs, the Hornets met the Nuggets from Denver , who won their first two home games. At home in New Orleans they cut to 1: 2, set a negative playoff record when they lost game four 63: 121. A new beginning (2010–2012)

The co-owner Gary Chouest may have wanted to buy up the hornets in order to become the sole owner of the company. Finally, just before the regular season began, the Hornets traded a conditional first-round draft pick with the Portland Trail Blazers for guard Jerryd Bayless on October 23 .

With these drastic changes to the roster, the team seemed younger, more athletic, and much better on the defensive. Several previous mis-commitments such as Peterson , Posey and Wright were abandoned . On the other hand, there were losses like point guard Darren Collison and the many draft picks in the future. As the 2010/11 season started, there were only three players ( Chris Paul , David West and Peja Stojaković ) left from the team that won the Southwest Division two years earlier. Contrary to the forecasts, the team had an impressive start. They broke a team record after five games by starting the season with five wins on November 5, and then winning three more times. At the end of the season, New Orleans finished seventh in the West and qualified for the 2011 playoffs, where they failed 4-2 in the first round at the second-placed Los Angeles Lakers .

Gary Chouest's takeover of the franchise failed in early December 2010, and with George Shinn unable to continue running the team financially, the NBA was expected to take it over to find a local owner.
