Statement

The New Orleans Pelicans are a team of the North American professional basketball league NBA . The home is the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans , Louisiana . The team plays in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference .

The Pelicans were founded as New Orleans Hornets for the 2002/03 season when the then Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans.

The flooding of New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina forced the Hornets to move to another city in the 2005-06 season . 35 home games as well as training took place in Oklahoma City . The official name of the team for this season and the following was New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets . At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , the team returned to New Orleans, where it again played all 41 home games in the New Orleans Arena.

In April 2013, the management changed its name to “Pelicans” ( pelicans ), as the fan base could not identify with the name “Hornets” ( hornets ) brought from Charlotte . According to the team leadership, a pelican is a better fit for the city because it is native to the coastal region and is the heraldic animal of the state of Louisiana. After the name "Hornets " was then free again, the Charlotte Bobcats franchise, founded in 2004, tried to change its name. From the 2014/15 season onwards , they competed again under the name Charlotte Hornets .

In the course of the name change, the Pelicans and Hornets agreed to transfer the history of the original Hornets from 1988 to 2002 to the "new " Hornets. This includes all achievements and statistics. The Pelicans kept the story that was won as the " New Orleans Hornets " from 2002 to 2013 .

history

The Early Years in New Orleans (2002-2005)

The Hornets opened their first season in New Orleans on October 30, 2002 against the former New Orleans franchise, the Utah Jazz . In the first NBA game in New Orleans in 17 years, they defeated the Jazz 100-75, while the jersey with the number 7 was retired by "Pistol" Pete Maravich at half-time . Despite Baron Davis ' agonizing injuries, the Hornets ended the season on a 47:35 record, allowing the franchise to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth time in a row. There it was defeated by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round .

After the season, the team unexpectedly sacked their head coach Paul Silas and replaced him with Tim Floyd . The 2003/04 season began the team strong with a 17: 7 record, subsided and ended the season 41:41, which they just missed the home advantage in the first round of the playoffs, where they met the Miami Heat. Dwyane Wade hit the last two throws in the first game of the series, which ended up in the seventh game in Miami.

Again, the head coach, this time Tim Floyd , was fired after the season and the team signed Byron Scott for it . Due to the move and the realignment of the divisions of the NBA, the Hornets played immediately in the tougher Southwest Division of the Western Conference , which already included four playoff teams with the San Antonio Spurs , the Dallas Mavericks , the Houston Rockets and the Memphis Grizzlies . It was therefore not expected that the team would have a chance to get a playoff spot. In a season marred by injuries to the three All-Stars (Baron Davis, Jamaal Magloire and Jamal Mashburn ), an 8-0 start turned into a 2:29 record, including a one-point loss after overtime to their successors in Charlotte, the Charlotte Bobcats , which was also the first game in the Charlotte franchise since moving in 2002. As a result of the lack of success, the team was redesigned by transferring veterans such as Baron Davis and Jamal Mashburn to begin a rebuilding. In January and February after that, the Hornets performed better again, ending the season with the worst record in franchise history, 18:64, and thus had more defeats than wins for the first time since the 1991/92 season.

Hurricane Katrina and the move to Oklahoma City (2005–2007)

Tyson Chandler

Due to the catastrophic devastation in southeast Louisiana from Hurricane Katrina , the Hornets temporarily moved to Oklahoma City ( 2005/06 - 2006/07 ). During this time the franchise was called "New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets". For those two seasons, the majority of home games were played at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, while some games continued to be played at the New Orleans Arena . Her training facility was the Sawyer Center on the Southern Nazarene University campus during her time in Oklahoma City. However, the team's training camp took place in 2006 at their training ground, the Alario Center in Westwego, Louisiana.

With the fourth pick in the 2005 NBA Draft , the Hornets chose Chris Paul as a future All-Star. In the 2005/06 season , the team played 36 games in Oklahoma City, one at the Lloyd Noble Center on the University of Oklahoma campus due to a conflict with the Ford Center , three games in New Orleans and one at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the campus of Louisiana State University . Baton Rouge was supposed to have five games in total , but due to the considerable progress made in restoring the New Orleans Arena , returning to New Orleans was a better option.

The team started the 2005-06 season better than expected, even after backup center Chris Andersen was given a two-year ban for drug use. It seemed like the team was using this as motivation and briefly held sixth place in the west. Ultimately, they lost twelve of 13 games, which they fell out of the playoff places. During this time, they set a negative NBA record when they only made 16 points in the second half against the Los Angeles Clippers . The Hornets recovered and tried one more time to get a place in the playoffs. In the end, they finished tenth in the Western Conference with a score of 38:44 . Despite the negative record, Chris Paul won the NBA Rookie of the Year award and several of his teammates were in the running for other individual awards.

After the season, the Hornets made big changes to the roster in hopes that they would make the Western Conference playoffs for the first time . So they traded J. R. Smith and P. J. Brown to the Chicago Bulls for Tyson Chandler . They also had Speedy Claxton sign with the Atlanta Hawks and filled the backup point guard position with free agents Bobby Jackson and Jannero Pargo . Furthermore, Peja Stojaković signed from the Indiana Pacers in New Orleans.

The franchise chose to stay in Oklahoma City for the 2006/07 season , promising to return to New Orleans as early as possible in 2007. This season the Hornets played 35 home games in Oklahoma, six in New Orleans and ended the season with a 39:43 record, one more win than in the previous season.

The successful operation in Oklahoma City contributed to the fact that the city was chosen as the new home of the Seattle SuperSonics in the season 2008/09 (see Oklahoma City Thunder ).

Back in The Big Easy (2007-2010)

For the 2007/08 season , the Hornets returned completely to New Orleans, so that all 41 home games could be played in the New Orleans Arena . League officials had emphasized at the beginning of the return of the franchise as soon as it was feasible to help rebuild it. That is why the 2008 NBA All-Star Game and the associated celebrations were awarded to New Orleans and a major marketing campaign was started in February 2007. Sponsorship agreements were then signed with various companies such as the Dr Pepper Snapple Group . They also brought in free agents Morris Peterson and Melvin Ely while they let go of former first-round draft pick Cedric Simmons. In addition, the franchise extended the contract of backup guard Jannero Pargo and selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft to forward Julian Wright from the University of Kansas .

The attendance at the New Orleans Arena increased in March and April 2008, when the team held out in first place. Twelve of the last 17 games in the regular season and the last 13 games of the entire season were sold out at the Hornets' home ground. Better than the previous season, the team stormed to a 29:12 half-season record (best record in the west), with Byron Scott coaching the Western Conference All-Stars at home in New Orleans . In addition, his players Chris Paul and David West were nominated as all-star reserve players. In addition, the aforementioned Chris Paul was nominated as NBA MVP 2008, only took second place in the vote. On February 21, the team agreed to a trade with the Houston Rockets in which the Rockets veteran Bobby Jackson and the Hornets would receive swingman Bonzi Wells and backup point guard Mike James .

The teams finished the regular season with a balance of 56:36, making this their most successful season ever. At the same time, this meant the team's first division title, as they won the Southwest Division before the San Antonio Spurs , and second place in the Western Conference Playoffs, where they defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the first round . In the conference semifinals they were able to achieve decisive victories in the first two games against the San Antonio Spurs, finally lost to the defending champions with 3: 4 in a close series.

In August 2008, the Hornets unveiled a modified logo and new jerseys in turquoise, purple and Mardi Gras gold, and the pinstripes were back on the playing attire. The writing was introduced changed as an allusion to the wrought-iron architecture of New Orleans and another third logo, which the abbreviation "NOLA" ( N ew O rleans, LA ( Louisiana ed)) and a trumpet. The franchise had also publicly announced sales of more than 10,000 season tickets for the 2008-09 season , a record since moving to New Orleans.

After the most successful season in franchise history, there were high expectations for the team, both in the regular season and in the 2009 playoffs. Several experts selected the Hornets as a repeat winner of the Southwest Division and a potential Western Conference champion.

While the core players from the preseason could be kept, forward James Posey was signed as a free agent by the Boston Celtics . On the other hand, point guard Jannero Pargo decided to go to Russia and play in the Russian Basketball Super League . In December 2008, Antonio Daniels , another point guard, was brought in through a trade. In exchange, the barely used Mike James and a future second-round draft pick were given. More notably, on February 18, it was announced that Center Tyson Chandler had been traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox in an effort to cut salary bills. However, due to a toe injury, Chandler's trade was canceled within a day.

For the second year in a row, the team took part in the All-Star Game with two players . Chris Paul was chosen by the fans for the game in Phoenix , while David West was nominated by the coaches for the reserve.

However, the season was like a roller coaster and in April it was clear that the balance of 56:26 from the previous season in the 2008/09 season was unattainable. The reason for this was mainly the injury problems of Tyson Chandler and Peja Stojaković . The Hornets ended the season with a disappointing 49:33 record, which meant fourth place in the division and seventh place in the conference. In the first round of the playoffs, the Hornets met the Nuggets from Denver , who won their first two home games. At home in New Orleans they cut to 1: 2, set a negative playoff record when they lost game four 63: 121. At the same time, it was the biggest loss of a home team in the regular season and in the playoffs of all time. The Hornets only hit 31.5% from the field and 13.3% from “ Downtown ”. The Hornets, which were destroyed on the ground, were subsequently eliminated in game five and an off-season began with a lot of squad speculation.

Following a highly unsuccessful end to the 2008-09 season and attempting to trade Tyson Chandler for expiring contracts during the season, the New Orleans Hornets continued to trim the payroll. In fact, when the free agent period began on July 1, they had the highest salaries of any team in the NBA , $ 77 million, up $ 7 million above the July 7 luxury tax .

Despite claims by the board of directors to make the team a favorite again, it came as a surprise when Tyson Chandler was traded on July 28th . In return, Emeka Okafor came from the Charlotte Bobcats . The remainder of Okafors five-year contract ($ 63 million / 5 year) saved them $ 1.3 million in 2009-10.

In the 2009 draft , the backcourt was traded by Darren Collison (21st pick) and Marcus Thornton (43rd pick from the heat ) for two future second-round picks. On August 12, 2009, the starting player Rasual Butler was also swapped for a second round pick in 2016 to save even more salary, as Butler would have received 3.9 million US dollars for the season. Since the Hornets were already above the luxury tax, this saving was doubly effective. A third trade on September 9 included guard Bobby Brown and forward Darius Songaila of the Minnesota Timberwolves , while Hornets guard Antonio Daniels moved to Minneapolis .

Efforts to get below the luxury tax threshold continued throughout the season. First, the disappointing back-up center Hilton Armstrong was sent to the Kings in Sacramento along with sums of money . For this, the team received another second-round draft pick in 2016. Shortly afterwards, the starting shooting guard Devin Brown was traded to Chicago for reserve center Aaron Gray . Another draft, in which back-up guard Bobby Brown went to the Clippers for a conditional second-round draft pick , brought the Hornets just below the luxury tax threshold.

On the court, the team got off to a disappointing start , with head coach Byron Scott sacked after a 3-6 start on November 12, 2009. Managing Director Jeff Bower took over the position for the remainder of the season. They overcame the bad start to the season and finished sixth in the Western Conference at the end of January . In the penultimate game in January, superstar Chris Paul was injured when he tried to get a ball bouncing out of bounds. He could not be used again until late in the season. The only highlights for the remainder of the season were the brilliant performances of rookies Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton . While Collinson achieved at least 18 points and nine assists in seven consecutive games, which no other rookie has achieved since Oscar Robertson , Marcus Thornton was able to beat himself over a 37-point evening (including a franchise record quarter with 23 points) the Cleveland Cavaliers look forward to February 23rd. Both rookies made it into the post-season all-rookie teams for the first time in franchise history.

The Hornets ended the season on a low 37:45 and slipped to the bottom of the Southwest Division, which they won two years earlier. Jeff Bower later resigned as head coach to focus on his front office duties. It wasn't long before Bower was released from the Hornets. On July 13, 2010, his nearly 15 year tenure in the franchise ended. In addition to the dismissal of Bowers, Monty Williams , the former assistant coach of the Portland Trail Blazers , was hired as a coach, making him the league's youngest head coach at the age of 38. As Bower's successor as General Manger hired the team Dell Demps of the San Antonio Spurs .

A new beginning (2010–2012)

Point Guard Darren Collison

With a new head coach and a new general manager in the franchise, the Hornets started into an uncertain future. The co-owner Gary Chouest may have wanted to buy up the hornets in order to become the sole owner of the company. The most likely consequence of removing George Shinn would have been financially beneficial, as Chouest was stronger than Shinn in that regard. In addition, there was the uncertainty related to the situation around the star point guard Chris Paul , who expressed dissatisfaction and a trade request several times during the off-season .

During the off-season, the roster was heavily edited. Many trades were carried out, which is due, among other things, to a new philosophy of the new trainer and GM, and to Chris Paul's off-season statements. Already on draft evening 2010 , the draft pick Cole Aldrich and the disappointing guard Morris Peterson were traded for the 21st and 26th pick of the Oklahoma City Thunder , through which the forwards Craig Brackins and Quincy Pondexter could be signed. On August 11, the strong rookie guard Darren Collison and forward James Posey were traded to the Indiana Pacers in a four-team trade . Small forward Trevor Ariza from Texas came from the Houston Rockets . In a separate trade, the very disappointing Julian Wright was shipped to the Toronto Raptors , while the Italian shooting guard Marco Belinelli came from Toronto . On September 23, 2010, rookie Craig Brackins, together with power forward Darius Songaila , was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers , and shooting guard Willie Green and center Jason Smith were brought in from Philadelphia . Finally, just before the regular season began, the Hornets traded a conditional first-round draft pick with the Portland Trail Blazers for guard Jerryd Bayless on October 23 .

With these drastic changes to the roster, the team seemed younger, more athletic, and much better on the defensive. Several previous mis-commitments such as Peterson , Posey and Wright were abandoned . On the other hand, there were losses like point guard Darren Collison and the many draft picks in the future. As the 2010/11 season started, there were only three players ( Chris Paul , David West and Peja Stojaković ) left from the team that won the Southwest Division two years earlier. Despite all efforts and the redesign of the roster, most experts predicted the Hornets would have a difficult season and little chance of eighth place in the west . Contrary to the forecasts, the team had an impressive start. They broke a team record after five games by starting the season with five wins on November 5, and then winning three more times. The first ten opponents were all kept below 100 points. Another team record was broken in January 2011 when the team celebrated ten wins in a row. At the end of the season, New Orleans finished seventh in the West and qualified for the 2011 playoffs, where they failed 4-2 in the first round at the second-placed Los Angeles Lakers .

Gary Chouest's takeover of the franchise failed in early December 2010, and with George Shinn unable to continue running the team financially, the NBA was expected to take it over to find a local owner. In the end, the league outbid Larry Ellison , CEO of Oracle Corporation , who was trying to buy out the Golden State Warriors , and paid an estimated $ 300 million for the franchise. Additionally, on January 24, 2011, the state, city, and local businesses in New Orleans came together and raised enough money to buy enough tickets to prevent the Hornets from taking advantage of the "escape clause" that the franchise provides would have allowed to leave the New Orleans Arena due to low attendance.

In the 2011 draft , the Hornets were only allowed to choose a player in the second round (with the 45th pick) and decided on Josh Harrellson from the University of Kentucky . Co-star David West also decided to try his hand at the free agent market, so didn't extend early with the Hornets. On July 1, 2011, there was a lockout in the NBA. After the end of the lockout West finally left the team and moved to the Indiana Pacers . There have been a lot of rumors about Chris Paul. In December it was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers before the start of the season . In return, the Hornets Center received Chris Kaman , Guard Eric Gordon , Forward Al-Farouq Aminu and a pick for the 2012 draft from the Minnesota Timberwolves . This ended the era of Chris Paul after 6 years and the Hornets initiated a reorganization of the roster. After the 2011/12 season went bad, the NBA sold the team to Tom Benson in June 2012 for $ 338 million.

The arrival of the monobrow, renamed Pelicans (2012-2019)

All-Star Anthony Davis

The Hornets won the first draft pick for the 2012 NBA Draft in the NBA Draft Lottery on May 30, 2012 . Before the draft, Center Emeka Okafor and Forward Trevor Ariza were sent to the Washington Wizards , from whom Forward Rashard Lewis came to New Orleans in return . On the evening of the draft, the college star Anthony Davis was chosen first, who, in addition to his basketball skills, remains in the minds of the fans, especially because of his mono brow . He was already on the roster of the US national basketball team for the Olympic Games in London in the summer of 2012 to replace the injured Blake Griffin . In addition, the 10th pick (from Minnesota ) Guard Austin Rivers , son of the Clippers coach Doc Rivers , from Duke University, and the 46th pick forward Darius Miller , who like the first pick, Davis, were drafted at the University of Kentucky played.

Forward Rashard Lewis , who was under contract with the Hornets, was immediately fired to have more opportunities for new signings. So the preseason's Most Improved Player , Ryan Anderson , came from Orlando in exchange for the Mexican Gustavo Ayón . In addition, the NBA experienced center Brad Miller came from Minnesota , while point guard Jarrett Jack ( Golden State Warriors ) and center Darryl Watkins ( Philadelphia 76ers ) left the Hornets. Another departure was Eric Gordon , who was presented with a contract from the Phoenix Suns . However, the management of the Hornets caught up with this offer, which kept Gordon in New Orleans. In addition, Robin Lopez and Hakim Warrick (from the Phoenix Suns) could be signed in a 3-team trade in which Jerome Dyson , newcomer Brad Miller and three draft picks had to be handed in to Minnesota . In addition, point guard Brian Roberts was signed by the German champions, the Brose Baskets Bamberg .

On November 8, 2012, only 62 points could be scored in the home defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers . This meant a new negative franchise record. In the 2012/13 season , as in the previous year, the playoffs were clearly missed.

During the summer of 2013, the team was reinforced with All-Star Jrue Holiday and Guard Tyreke Evans . Robin Lopez, however, switched to the Portland Trail Blazers . The previously announced name change away from Hornets to Pelicans was also completed in the summer of 2013 . The owners and managers of the team hope that the fans will identify more with the team. With Ömer Aşık, the Pelicans piloted a new center in New Orleans in the summer of 2014 and strengthened the bank with experienced staff from other NBA teams. As a result, the Pelicans made it into the play-offs in 2014/2015 in 8th place in the Western Conference. There the team failed in the first round, however, with 0: 4 against the Golden State Warriors . A few weeks after leaving the play offs, the Pelicans announced the separation from head coach Monty Williams .

The new Pelicans trainer was Alvin Gentry . However, this could not reach the playoffs with the Pelicans due to many injuries to the regular players Gordon, Anderson, Holiday, Evans and Davis. They ended up with 30 victories behind in twelfth place in the Western Conference. In the course of the 2016 NBA draft , the Pelicans signed college stars Buddy Hield in sixth place. The Pelicans started the season poorly. During the All-Star Weekend, Star Center DeMarcus Cousins was signed up by the Sacramento Kings . In return, Hield and Tyreke Evans joined the Kings. Despite the well-known reinforcement, the Pelicans could not reach the playoffs again.

The Pelicans started the 2017/18 season with an almost unchanged roster . However, DeMarcus Cousins was injured during the season and was out for the remainder of the season. The Pelicans then got Nikola Mirotic from the Chicago Bulls . With him, Davis, Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo , the Pelicans reached the NBA playoffs somewhat surprisingly. In these they eliminated the Portland Trail Blazers 4-0 in the first round . In the next round, the Pelicans met defending champion Golden State Warriors . The Warriors were then defeated 1: 4.

DeMarcus Cousins left the Pelicans after his contract for the Golden State ended . As a replacement, the young power forward Julius Randle , who had previously played for the Los Angeles Lakers , was signed for two years and, with point guard Elfrid Payton , another young player joined the ranks of the franchise. New Orleans played a good season and achieved 48 wins of the season, which qualified for the playoffs and defeated the favored Portland Trail Blazers in the first playoff round .

Post-Davis Era: New Beginning with Williamson (Since 2019)

The Pelicans could not fight for the playoffs in the 2018/19 season. To make matters worse, star player Anthony Davis was increasingly dissatisfied with the sporting development of the Pelicans and publicly demanded a transfer in the middle of the season. After the Pelicans clearly missed the playoffs, they won the first pick at the draft lottery. In the wake of ongoing speculation about Anthony Davis, he was transferred to the Los Angeles Lakers shortly before the 2019 NBA draft . In return, the young talents Brandon Ingram , Lonzo Ball , Josh Hart and some draft picks moved to New Orleans. In the subsequent NBA draft, the Pelicans selected Zion Williamson , Jaxson Hayes and Nickeil Alexander-Walker , three players in the first round of the draft.
