Statement

The Golden State Warriors are a basketball team from the US basketball league NBA . The team has been based in San Francisco , California, since 2019 , after having played in neighboring Oakland for many years . The current name refers to the US state of California, which is called the " Golden State " based on the gold rush of 1849 .

The Philadelphia Beginnings and Championships

Founded in 1946 by Eddie Gottlieb under the name Philadelphia Warriors , the club was a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which would later become the National Basketball Association (NBA). In 1946/47 the team won the first officially held basketball championship of this new major league. The team won the championship twice while it was still based in Philadelphia, in 1947 and 1956, with Paul Arizin as the star of the day. In 1961 Gottlieb sold the team to a group of investors from San Francisco , whereupon they moved to San Francisco and renamed themselves San Francisco Warriors .

In the early 1960s, the Warriors had one of the most dominant players in history in Wilt Chamberlain . In 1965, however, this left the team and went back to Philadelphia, to the Philadelphia 76ers . In 1970 the company moved to the other side of San Francisco Bay to Oakland and was renamed the Golden State Warriors . Al Attles took on the team for more than a decade that year. The 1970s were particularly marked by superstar Rick Barry , who won the championship with the Warriors in 1975, and center Nate Thurmond , who played for the Warriors from 1963 to 1974.

The 1980s and the Run TMC era

In 1978 Barry left the Warriors after failing to reach the playoffs. In the coming years, the team was not a playoff participant due to bad management decisions. For example, the draft rights to Kevin McHale and Robert Parish were sold to the Boston Celtics . In the 1985 NBA Draft , Chris Mullin was selected in seventh place. This quickly developed into the star of the team. In 1986 George Karl took over the team. Together with Sleepy Floyd and Joe Barry Carroll , the playoffs were reached again in 1987 for the first time in eleven years. In 1988, Guard Mitch Richmond joined the draft, and Tim Hardaway in 1989 . Together with Mullin, the trio formed the Run TMC era, which stood for offensive basketball and reached the playoffs in 1991 under coach Don Nelson .

The unsuccessful 1990s and 2000s

In the summer of 1991, top scorer Richmond was sold to the Sacramento Kings for the draft rights to Billy Owens. The Warriors reached the playoffs again in 1992 with Mullin and Hardaway with 55 wins this season. 1993 the playoffs were clearly missed. About the NBA Draft 1993 you got Chris Webber , who was drawn in first draft position. Playoffs were reached with the young star Latrell Sprewell in 1994, but Webber fell out with coach Nelson and was sold to the Washington Bullets at the end of the season . The Warriors received the first pick in the 1995 NBA Draft and selected Joe Smith , but this could never meet expectations and was transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1998 . The previous star player Hardaway was transferred to the Miami Heat in the middle of the 1995/96 season . 1997, Mullin, the last Run TMC member left the team. Sprewell was banned from the NBA for much of the 1997/98 season after a violent argument with coach PJ Carlesimo and sold to the New York Knicks in 1998 . Even in the late 90s, the Warriors remained an unsuccessful team that could not reach the playoffs. Bad decisions were made especially in NBA drafts . In 1996 Todd Fuller was selected over Kobe Bryant or Steve Nash , and in 1997 Adonal Foyle was selected over Tracy McGrady .

Baron Davis (2005-2008)

In the early 2000s, the Warriors had Jason Richardson , Antawn Jamison , Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Gilbert Arenas have a talented core. In 2003 this team achieved 38 victories, more than in years. It wasn't enough for the playoffs. Due to the busy salary cap you could not extend with Arenas on the desired terms, whereupon he left the team after the season and joined the Washington Wizards . In 2004 Chris Mullin took over the team again as General Manager, but was not yet able to achieve the goals set. However, his work is seen as more successful than the work of his predecessor Gary St. Jean, who is considered by fans as the "worst GM of all time". Jamison was sold to the Wizards. In 2005 you could sign Star Point Guard Baron Davis from the New Orleans Hornets .

In 2006 Don Nelson took over the coaching position again. Together with Richardson, Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson , the playoffs were reached again for the first time in 13 years in the 2006/07 season - a record in the NBA. There the team managed to beat the first-placed Dallas Mavericks in eighth place. The Mavericks were considered a big favorite due to their outstanding season, in which they were the most successful team in the NBA with 67 wins. Nevertheless, the Golden State Warriors surprisingly prevailed with 4: 2 victories thanks to brilliant fighting performances and the good tactics of their coach Nelson. It was only the third time in the history of the NBA play-offs and the first time since the introduction of the best-of-seven series in the first play-off round that a team placed eighth against the regular season -Champ was able to prevail. However, they were eliminated in the second round against the Utah Jazz . Despite 48 wins in the following season, the Warriors did not qualify for the playoffs in the strong west. The team was slowly falling apart. Richardson was sold to the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007 , now Davis has left the team to Los Angeles to the Clippers . The Warriors finished the 2008/09 season with 29 wins. In the 2009 NBA draft , Stephen Curry was selected seventh .

After missing the playoffs in 2010, star player Monta Ellis was sold to the Milwaukee Bucks , in return Andrew Bogut came . In July 2010 it was announced that the then owner Chris Cohan the team for a then-record $ 450 million dollars to Joe Lacob and Peter Guber wanted to sell. Cohan previously struggled financially, and in the 15 years he owned the team, the Warriors made only one playoff in the 2006/07 season . According to the press, the geographic location of the team was the main reason for the high purchase price. The San Francisco Bay Area applies with around seven million inhabitants as one of the most profitable markets of the USA Basketball. Joe Lacob said after the purchase that he and his partner plan to return the Warriors to their old size and that the team will fight for nothing less than the title ( “It is our passion to return the Warriors to greatness and build nothing short of a championship organization that will make all of us proud in the Bay Area. ” ) Likewise, All-Star Forward David Lee was signed by the New York Knicks . From 2011 Mark Jackson took over the coaching position. About the NBA draft 2011 you got Klay Thompson , who was selected in eleventh place. Together with Curry, he would form the Splash Brothers era over the next few years , known for their dreaded distance throws. In the 2012 NBA draft , Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green were chosen as other important talents who would later develop into regular players.

In May 2012, it was announced that the team would play in a new arena at the old home ground of San Francisco from 2017. The move date was later postponed by two years. In the 2012/13 season , sixth in the Western Conference after six years and the second time in 19 years, the playoffs were reached again. The most important player with over 20 points per game and an historic NBA record of 272 three-point throws was Stephen Curry. Together with Klay Thompson, both hit 483 three-point throws. That was also a historic record. In the first round of the playoffs, the Warriors met the Denver Nuggets and won the series 4-2. In the second round, the Warriors met the San Antonio Spurs . The Warriors finally lost 4-2 against the favorites from Texas.

Before the 2013/14 season , Andre Iguodala and Jermaine O'Neal moved two veterans into the Warriors' squad. After a weak start, head coach Mark Jackson's team was able to improve significantly and reached the playoffs again in 2014. There the Warriors were eliminated in the first round against the Los Angeles Clippers . After leaving the playoffs, the Warriors announced the split from Mark Jackson. He was succeeded by Steve Kerr .

Record years and back-to-back finals

The 2014-15 season was a historic one for the Warriors. They finished the regular season 65:17, which not only meant the franchise record, but also the season best of all teams. The Splash Brothers played a big part in that. Both had a 50-point game this season. Klay Thompson put on 52 points against the Sacramento Kings on January 23, 2015. He scored 37 points in the third quarter and hit all of his 13 throwing attempts (including 9 threes). Those 37 points set a new NBA record for the most points in a quarter. Curry led the Warriors to victory over the Dallas Mavericks on February 4, 2015 with 51 points . He improved his own NBA record for most three-pointers converted to 286 that season. In total, Curry and Thompson converted 525 three-pointers, at a rate of 44%. Both players were invited to the NBA All-Star Game this year , in which they started in the Western Conference team under their rookie head coach Steve Kerr. Stephen Curry has been named the league's MVP for accomplishments that season . This makes him the second warrior to receive this honor after Wilt Chamberlain, who last won this award in 1960 (back then as a Philadelphia Warrior).

The Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-2 in the NBA Finals and thus secured their fourth NBA championship. Instead of Curry or Thompson, however, Andre Iguodala was chosen as the Finals MVP . After the Warriors were down after three games 1: 2, he was called up by coach Steve Kerr for game 4 in the starting lineup. With him in place of the taller Andrew Bogut in the center position, the Warriors played a lot better. Iguodala had the special task of covering for Superstar LeBron James from the Cavaliers. He is the first player in history to receive this award despite not having played a single game in the regular season from the start. At the same time he became the first Finals MVP who did not start in all finals .

The Warriors got off to a furious start into the 2015/16 season and made a record start with 20 wins in a row, beating the records of the Washington Capitols (1948/49) and Houston Rockets (1993/94). In addition, the win against the Los Angeles Lakers was the 43rd home win in a row with at least 100 points. This was last achieved by the Denver Nuggets in the 1990/91 season. After 24 consecutive wins and a new season start record, the Warriors lost to the Milwaukee Bucks . Across the seasons, the Warriors got 28 wins in a row, which is the second longest winning streak in NBA history (unbeaten thus the 33 victories in a row of the Los Angeles Lakers 1971/72). A defeat on April 1, 2016 at home in Oakland, the first home defeat in a regular season game since January 27, 2015, ended the longest home winning streak in NBA history after 54 games. The Warriors won in the penultimate 81st game of the season in San Antonio and ended their turn the home winning streak of the Spurs after 48 games. At the same time, they became the first team to not lose two games in a row within a season.

In the last game, the team exceeded the previous record in the season record, which was set up by the Chicago Bulls in the 1995/96 season with 72:10. With a 125-104 win over the Memphis Grizzlies , the Warriors finished the season with a score of 73-9. In the playoffs, the Warriors made a comeback in the Western Conference Finals. After they were already behind with 1: 3 in the best-of-seven series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, they made it back to the NBA Finals with three wins in a row. As in the previous year, the Cleveland Cavaliers were waiting there . After the comeback in the conference finals, the Warriors were now on the other side of a comeback. After they had already led 3: 1, the Cavaliers managed to take three wins and thus to win 4: 3 and thus the title.

The creation of the “Big 4” and another championship title

On July 4, 2016, Kevin Durant announced that he would be joining the Golden State Warriors. Together with Green, Thompson and Curry he formed the "Big 4" of four All-Star and All-NBA players.

In the 2016/17 season, the Warriors finished the main round with 67 wins and 15 losses as the best team in the West. In the championship round they prevailed against Portland, Utah and San Antonio with 4-0 victories and met defending champions Cleveland in the final series. Head coach Steve Kerr's squad won the first three clashes against the Cavaliers, Golden State conceded the only playoff defeat of the year in the fourth game before the league title was retracted in the fifth game. Durant was named the best player in the final series. The start of the 2017/18 season with three defeats in the first seven games was followed by a more successful phase, so that Oakland closed the regular season with a record of 58 wins to 24 losses. With a strong Triple Double Durants in the final game, the Warriors won the finals again with flawless 4-0 wins against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In the free agency phase before the 2018/19 season, the Golden State Warriors surprisingly secured Center DeMarcus Cousins , who signed a one-year contract on extremely favorable terms. With Cousins, the Warriors can now play with a full line-up of current all-stars. With the sixth man Andre Iguodala , the Warriors also have another All-Star - Iguodala was voted into the All-Star Game in 2012 - in their ranks. Like the other four starters, Cousins is an excellent shooter from beyond the three-point line. Due to a ruptured Achilles tendon in January and the current rehabilitation phase, it will probably only be used during the season.

Venues

From 1966 to 2019, the Oracle Arena was the home hall of the Golden State Warriors. At home games, the arena offered space for 19,596 spectators. Only during the renovation of the Oracle Arena from 1996 to 1997 did the Warriors leave the arena and play their home games in the HP Pavilion (today SAP Center ) in nearby San Jose .

During their time in San Francisco, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, War Memorial High School, and Cow Palace were the home venues for the Warriors. They have been playing at the Chase Center in San Francisco since 2019 .
