Joe Barry Carroll (born July 24, 1958 in Pine Bluff , Arkansas ) is a retired American basketball player .

Career

After Carroll had played and studied for four years at Purdue University , he was selected in the 1980 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors in first position. Many criticized the choice of Carroll, as the Warriors shortly before transferred the draft rights to the future Hall-of-Famer Kevin McHale and talent Robert Parish to the Boston Celtics in order to be able to draft Carroll in the first place. Still, Carroll had productive years in Oakland with the Warriors. With the exception of an interruption in the 1984/85 season, where he played for the Italian top club Olimpia Milano , Carroll played seven years in the jersey of the Warriors. During this time he scored 20.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. In 1987 he was also invited to the NBA All-Star Game and reached the playoffs for the first time with the Warriors in the same year.

In December 1987 he was transferred to the Houston Rockets for Ralph Sampson . He left the Rockets at the end of the season and signed with the New Jersey Nets . At the Nets he was a productive player as a starter and scored 14 points and 7.4 rebounds on average. During the 1989/90 season Carroll was released by the Nets to the Denver Nuggets , which he left in the summer of 1990 to join the Phoenix Suns . He only played 11 games with the Suns and was then fired.

In 1991 Carroll announced his resignation. In nine years in the NBA and over 700 games, he scored 17.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.
