The Brooklyn Nets are a basketball - Franchise from the North American basketball league National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise was founded in 1967 as New Jersey Americans and was based in Teaneck , New Jersey. After just one year, the company moved to Long Island , New York and was renamed New York Nets . From 1977 to 2012, the team was based in East Rutherford , New Jersey as the New Jersey Nets and moved to the Brooklyn borough of New York City as the Brooklyn Nets in 2012 .

Early years in the ABA

Founded in 1967 as New Jersey Americans , the franchise was a founding member of the American Basketball Association . As early as the next season, the Americans became the New York Nets with a move to Long Island .

In their first season in New York they had 17 wins against 61 defeats, by far the worst record in the league. Already in the next season they were able to improve their balance sheet significantly and made the playoffs for the first time, in which they had to admit defeat to the Kentucky Colonels after seven games . In 1970 the Nets brought Rick Barry , a star player of the ABA, to New York for the first time, two years later their record showed more wins than losses for the first time and they managed to advance to the final of the playoffs, where they were defeated in six games by the Indiana Pacers . Then Barry left the Nets and in the following 1972/73 season they only reached the first round of the playoffs. At the beginning of the 1973/74 season , the management hired Julius Erving . He led the Nets to the best record in the league and their first title. In five finals they won with him against the Utah Stars . 1974/75 they were able to achieve the most victories in the history of the ABA with 58 wins, but did not manage to defend the title. In the last ABA season they again secured the championship against the Denver Nuggets . During this time Erving was the dominant player of the ABA and secured two championships, three MVP trophies and three ABA scoring titles in the shirt of the Nets. Due to the dissolution of the ABA and the change of the Nets to the NBA, the Nets could no longer hold Erving due to the membership fee to the NBA and compensation contribution to the New York Knicks , which was required by the Knicks for the change to the same market and let this go to the Philadelphia 76ers .

After the end of the ABA, the Nets finally moved to the NBA for the 1977 season. In the NBA, too, they relocated again after only one year and returned to the neighboring state under the name New Jersey Nets . The team has never been able to develop a larger fan base due to the many moves and was one of the most unpopular teams in the NBA in terms of audience numbers. This is due to the far more popular neighbor, the New York Knicks from Manhattan , who is still very popular with fans despite years of poor performance. However, the Nets were also not among the successful teams in the 1980s. Although you could qualify five times in a row for the playoffs between 1982 and 1986, but only reached the second playoff round in 1984. The team consisted at that time of the talented frontcourt to Buck Williams and Mike Gminski , as well as to veterans Otis Birdsong and Micheal Ray Richardson . The end of the 1980s was marked by failure. As a result, the NBA draft with young talents like Derrick Coleman and Kenny Anderson could strengthen. In addition, Dražen Petrović moved to the team in 1991 and the Nets reached the playoffs in the following three years, but where again in the first round was over. After the death of their star player Petrović in 1993, they reached the playoffs in 1994, then the rebuilding followed without Coleman. After a short unsuccessful dry spell, the Nets reached the playoffs again in 1998 with new players such as Sam Cassell and Keith Van Horn and coach John Calipari , where they were defeated by the Chicago Bulls 0-3 in the first round. However, the talented team could never meet expectations due to injury problems of the hopefuls Van Horn and Kerry Kittles and missed the playoffs in the following two years.

By signing Jason Kidd in 2001, the Nets formed a talented starting five with him, Kenyon Martin , Richard Jefferson , Van Horn and Kittles. The Nets achieved their greatest successes in the NBA in 2002 and 2003 when they both won the conference title . In the finals they were then subject to the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs . The defining player in the franchise at the time was Jason Kidd. Kidd stayed with the Nets until 2008. During this time he formed a strong trio with Vince Carter , who joined the team in 2004, and Jefferson, which remained a regular playoff participant until 2007. After Kidd, Jefferson and Carter also left the franchise and the Nets fell into insignificance in the late 2000s.

At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , the Nets set an inglorious record. With the loss on December 2 to the Dallas Mavericks , they lost for the 18th time in a row since the start of the season. This surpassed the records of the Miami Heat from 1988 and the Los Angeles Clippers from 1999, both of which had lost 17 times in a row at the beginning of a season. With their first win on December 4th against the Charlotte Bobcats , they were able to end the series. For the 2010/11 season , Avery Johnson took over the position of coach. In February 2011, the Nets Deron Williams drowned from Utah Jazz . With him and Brook Lopez , the playoffs should be reached under the new owner Mikhail Prokhorov .

Moved to Brooklyn

In 2004 the team was sold to Bruce Ratner , who announced that they would be moving to Brooklyn , New York City . The Barclays Center , designed by the well-known architect Frank Gehry , stands on historical terrain, on the site that was denied to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1957 and is said to be the centerpiece of an economic and social revitalization of the run-down downtown Brooklyn . Construction on the arena began on March 11, 2010. In order to bridge the time to the completion of the new arena in Brooklyn, the Nets announced that they would play at the Prudential Center in Newark from the 2010/11 season . On April 12, 2010, the Nets played their last game at the Izod Center . With the loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, the Nets left the arena in East Rutherford after 29 years. The Nets moved to Brooklyn after the 2011/12 season - after 35 years in New Jersey.

During the 2012 offseason , Deron Williams , Gerald Wallace , Kris Humphries and Brook Lopez's contracts were renewed. In addition, the multiple all-star Joe Johnson was signed by the Atlanta Hawks .

During the 2012/13 season , a new club record for the highest difference in a win in an away game could be set up with a 107: 68 win in Orlando on November 10, 2012 with 39 points difference. The old record was held so far with 34 points against the Philadelphia 76ers (January 15, 1986). After a good start to the season, the Nets were able to establish themselves in the top group of the Eastern Conference. A series of defeats followed in December and the Nets slipped into midfield. As a result, head coach Avery Johnson was released from his duties on December 27, 2012 . Under interim coach PJ Carlesimo, the Nets landed fourth in the Eastern Conference on March 21, 2013 for the first time since the 2006/07 season a place in the playoffs. There, however, they lost in the first round after seven games in front of their home crowd. Shortly thereafter, head coach PJ Carlesimo split up, who had only taken over the team as head coach in December. He was replaced by former Nets player Jason Kidd .

Shortly after Kidd's engagement as head coach, the Nets announced the next player changes. Via Trade, the team secured the services of Kevin Garnett , Paul Pierce and Jason Terry , all of whom moved to Brooklyn from the Boston Celtics . In return, Gerald Wallace , Kris Humphries , Marshon Brooks and future Picks left the club for Boston. On February 23, 2014, the Nets gave Jason Collins a ten-day contract. This makes them the first US professional team to have an openly homosexual player. The sales of Collins' jersey skyrocketed, the proceeds of which will be donated in full. On March 5, Collins received a new ten-day contract. Despite the long absence of Center Lopez, the season ended sportily in the second round of the play-offs. There the Nets lost to the Miami Heat with 1: 4 wins. Following the season, there were disagreements between head coach Jason Kidd and the club's management. Kidd was then released from his duties and became the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks .

Successor for the 2014/2015 season was Lionel Hollins , who previously worked for the Memphis Grizzlies until 2013 . Hollins got a contract until 2017. Pierce left the team for Washington Wizards . So the new season started without any major changes. The Nets reached the playoffs, but were eliminated against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. During the 2015 offseason , Deron Williams was fired from the Nets. This has not been able to meet expectations since his contract extension.

The 2015/16 season was disappointing. Head coach Hollins was dismissed as coach after a 10-27 start to the season and replaced by Tony Brown. Long-time star player Joe Johnson agreed on a buyout with the Nets. Brooklyn achieved only 21 wins and thus clearly missed the play-offs. As a result, the Nets fully relied on a reorganization of the squad in 2016/2017 and installed a new head coach with Kenny Atkinson, who should implement the long-term reorganization. Atkinson previously worked as an assistant coach with the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks . Despite new signings such as Jeremy Lin and Luis Scola , the 16/17 season ended disappointingly again with a record of 20 wins and 62 losses. Due to the transfer with the Celtics around Pierce and Garnett in 2013, the Nets lost their first round picks, which promised high draft placements in the drafts of 2016 and 2017. In 2017, the Nets should even have come first. Shortly before the draft, the Nets decided to swap the face of their recent franchise Brook Lopez for center Timofey Mozgov and the talent D'Angelo Russell to the Los Angeles Lakers .

The 2017/18 season was a bit more successful with 28 wins, but the team, consisting of many young players, such as Russell, Caris LeVert , Spencer Dinwiddie , Jarrett Allen , Joe Harris and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson , clearly missed the playoff. In the following year, the Nets started the new season with an almost unchanged squad and thanks to the significant increase of D'Angelo Russell , who also became NBA All-Star, as well as Dinwiddie and Jarrett Allen, they achieved a total of 42 wins of the season and were able to achieve each other for the first time since 2015 qualify for the playoffs.

Venues

When she was in New Jersey, the Izod Center was the home of the Nets from 1981 to 2010. After the move to Brooklyn became more concrete, the Nets decided to play in New Jersey at the Prudential Center for the last two years . In the summer of 2012, the company finally moved to the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The arena offers space for 18,000 spectators at home games of the Nets.
