Lionel Eugene Hollins (born October 19, 1953 in Arkansas City , Kansas ) is an American basketball coach and former player who was under contract as head coach with the Memphis Grizzlies and most recently with the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA .

Player career

In the NBA he played for 5 teams. As the 6th pick of the Portland Trail Blazers , he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team due to his performance in his debut season . He had been able to achieve an average of 10.8 points per game this season.

In the 1976/77 NBA season he won with Portland in the NBA Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers in 6 games and was NBA champion with the Trail Blazers. The next year he was appointed to the All-Star Team and the All-Defensive First Team .

When he ended his playing career, he had 7,809 points, 3,006 assists and 1,053 steals .

In April 2007, the Trail Blazers withdrew Hollins' jersey number 14. It is no longer awarded by the team.

Coaching career

He started his coaching career at his old college, Arizona State University , where he was from 1985 to 1986 and from 1987 to 1988 assistant coach of the basketball team.

In the 1999/2000 NBA season he was the interim coach of the Vancouver Grizzlies . He has coached the Memphis Grizzlies since the 2008-09 NBA season . On February 11, 2011, he celebrated his 100th victory when he defeated the Milwaukee Bucks with the Grizzlies with 89:86. In the 2010/11 season, his team made it into the playoffs, surprisingly defeated the San Antonio Spurs 4-2 in the first round , and then defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games in the second round . Shortly after the end of the season, the Grizzlies announced that Hollins would not receive a new contract as head coach for the 2013/2014 season.

Hollins then worked again as an expert for US television and analyzed the NBA games.

For the 2014/2015 season he was introduced as the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets . The Nets had previously split from their previous coach, Jason Kidd . However, Hollins was fired in January 2016 due to unsuccessfulness.
