Steal (basketball)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A steal (in German to steal , steal ) is a technical term for the sport of basketball .

A steal is the conquest of the ball by the defending team as part of defense work. After a steal, the team defending until then can immediately go on to attack.

Winning the ball through a self-inflicted mistake by the attacking team (e.g. through a step error, return leg over the center line, pass out of bounds) is not a steal. Also not a steal is the conquest of the ball after an attempt by the attacking team.

A steal is therefore one of several forms of winning the ball. A steal by the defending team is always associated with a turnover by the attacking team, but not every turnover is a steal.

The number of steals is shown in the official game statistics, e.g. B. the basketball league , and is included in the calculation of effectiveness .
