Samuel "Sam" James Cassell (born November 18, 1969 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a retired American basketball player .

Career

Cassell began his career at Florida State University . He was drafted in the NBA Draft 1993 in 24th place by the Houston Rockets , which he helped to win two NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, until he was traded to the Phoenix Suns for Charles Barkley after the 1995-1996 season . His next stations were the Dallas Mavericks and the New Jersey Nets , where he had little success, despite the fact that he was one of the best players in the Nets with 19 points per game.

Two years later it was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks . There he formed together with Ray Allen one of the best guard duos that there has ever been in the NBA. In 2001, the Bucks narrowly missed the NBA final and were eliminated in the Eastern Conference final. After two more successful years in Milwaukee, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2003 together with Ervin Johnson in exchange with Joe Smith and Anthony Peeler . Cassell had his best year in Minnesota, scoring 19.8 points and 7.3 assists per game, was invited to the NBA All-Star Game for the first time , received an All-NBA Second Team appointment and had the best record of the Western Conference with the Timberwolves . But also with the Wolves they failed in the Western Conference finals. But the next year was less successful. Cassell was struggling with injury problems and was unhappy with the sacking of coach Flip Saunders . Therefore, he was traded on August 12, 2005 against Marko Jarić and Lionel Chalmers and a draft pick to the Los Angeles Clippers . In 2006 he helped the Clippers to play for the first time since 1997. But he struggled with injury over the next few years. The Clippers decided in the 2007-08 season to rebuild and agreed with Cassell on a buyout. Cassell became a free agent on February 28, 2008 until the Boston Celtics secured his services. Cassell completed the remaining 17 games of the season for the Celtics and qualified with the Celtics for the playoffs. With the Celtics he won his third championship in the same year.

After his career ended, Cassell decided to pursue a career as a coach. For the 2010/2011 season he became Assistant Coach of the Washington Wizards . In this position he worked for the Washington team until 2014. After his contract expired, he accepted an offer from the Los Angeles Clippers and will also work there as an assistant coach.
