Joseph Leynard Smith (born July 26, 1975 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is a retired American basketball player who played in the NBA between 1995 and 2011. In the 1995 NBA draft , Smith was the first overall pick .

NBA

After playing for the University of Maryland for two years and being named Naismith College Player of the Year , Smith signed up for the 1995 NBA draft . He was first drafted by the Golden State Warriors . Players drawn shortly after him included future all-stars Antonio McDyess , Jerry Stackhouse , Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett .

The athletic forward closed his first season with 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. When the NBA Rookie of the Year Award was presented , Smith finished third behind Damon Stoudamire and Arvydas Sabonis . He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . The following year he improved his points yield to 18.7 points per game. During the 1997-98 season, Smith was traded at his own request from the Warriors to the Philadelphia 76ers . In Philadelphia he played alongside Allen Iverson , but his values dropped to an average of 10 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. After the lockout in 1999, he signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves for little money . There Smith and Kevin Garnett made a good forward team. He increased his statistical values to 13.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

As it turned out later, Wolves manager Kevin McHale Smith promised a new multi-million deal at a later date, if Smith signs a contract for under market conditions. The Wolves management wanted to create more financial leeway in the salary cap to be able to sign more players. Because of this scandal, the Timberwolves were sentenced to a heavy fine. The Wolves also had no first-round draft rights for the next five years . Joe Smith was fired after the scandal and signed a new contract with the Detroit Pistons . After a successful year with the Pistons, Smith returned to the Wolves and stayed with the team until 2003.

In 2003 Smith joined the Milwaukee Bucks , where he scored a good 10 points and 6 rebounds per game in three seasons. During the 2006-07 season he played for the Denver Nuggets before he moved back to the 76ers with Andre Miller in exchange for Allen Iverson . After the season he signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls .

This was followed by several missions for different teams, in which he filled the role of supplementary player. After he moved from the Bulls to the Cleveland Cavaliers , a trade followed with the Oklahoma City Thunder . The Thunder fired Smith and he signed another contract with the Cavaliers two days later. After the season, engagements with the Atlanta Hawks and New Jersey Nets followed , before the Nets transferred him to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010 . At the Lakers, Smith completed the remaining 12 games. After that, he was without a contract and has not been hired by any team since then. After that, Smith ended his career. In over 1000 NBA games, Smith came up with an average of 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Judging by his draft position, Smith could not entirely meet expectations, despite an above-average long NBA career.

Others

Smith was also active as a musician and released a rap album under the pseudonym Joe Beast . In the movie Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault , Smith plays basketball legend Connie Hawkins . Smith has played for 12 of 30 NBA teams in his career. There are only three other players in NBA history who also played for 12 teams in their careers.
