Walter Ray Allen (born July 20, 1975 in Merced , California ) is a retired American basketball player . He played in the NBA from 1996 to 2014 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018 .

Allen was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in fifth place in the 1996 NBA draft and developed into one of the best scorers and distance shooters in the league in the following seasons. A few years later he was transferred to the Seattle SuperSonics . In Seattle, Allen set several three -point and free-throw records, but could not win any titles. In 2007 he was given to the Boston Celtics .

In Boston, Allen formed the league's best trio with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and won the 2008 NBA Finals . He stayed in the franchise for five seasons before joining the Miami Heat . Allen took on a reserve role in Miami, but still played a significant role in another championship in 2013 .

Allen was All-Star ten times in his NBA career and has scored the most three-point throws in league history, both in the regular season and in the playoffs . Everyone agrees that he is one of the best long-range shooters of all time.

Ray Allen grew up as the son of a military man in Saxmundham , England , Altus , Oklahoma , Edwards Air Force Base , California, and Germany.

College basketball

Allen attended the University of Connecticut from 1993 to 1996. In 1995 he was named USA Basketball's Male Athlete of the Year . In his senior year in college as a junior , he was named to the All-American 1st Team and Big East Player of the Year .

At the end of his college career, he had the third most points in U-Conn history (1,922) and the record for most converted three-point throws in a season (1995/96: 115).

NBA career

Milwaukee Bucks (1996-2003)

His professional career began in the 1996/97 season with the Milwaukee Bucks , which exchanged him along with a draft pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves for Stephon Marbury after Allen was drafted as the 5th player by the Timberwolves. After his first season, he was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . In 2001 he won the three-point shootout at the All-Star Weekend .

As part of the "Big Three" around him, Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassell , the Bucks reached the Eastern Conference Finals in the same year , but in which they had to admit defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers after seven games .

Seattle SuperSonics (2003-2007)

After six and a half years with the Bucks, he was transferred to the Seattle SuperSonics (for Gary Payton ) during the 2002/03 season . After a 2003/04 season riddled with injuries , Allen and teammate Rashard Lewis led the 2005 Sonics to the semifinals of the Western Conference. After the season, Allen signed a five-year deal with the Sonics for a total of $ 80 million.

On March 12, 2006, Ray Allen became the 97th player in NBA history to score 15,000 points in his career. On April 7, 2006, he moved up to the second place player with the most converted three-point throws in the history of the NBA - only Reggie Miller could convert more threesomes.

Boston Celtics (2007–2012)

On March 28, 2008, Allen was named the third of the twenty best players in the 40-year history of the Milwaukee Bucks , but he was unable to attend the Bucks festivities because he had to play a game for the Celtics. On June 17, 2008 Allen broke two NBA Finals records: He scored seven three-point throws in one NBA Finals game and 22 in the entire NBA Finals series.

He became All-Star for the 9th time in February 2009, and his points average in the first 13 seasons of his career was 21.1 points per game. In the first round of the 2009 NBA Playoffs, Allen scored 51 points in the sixth game against the Chicago Bulls . On December 10, 2009 he was able to record the 20,000 point in his career. In Game 2 of the 2010 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers , Allen set two new records. In the first half he achieved the record of 7 converted 3-point throws, on the other hand the record of 8 converted 3-point throws in one game. In total, Allen scored 32 points in this game.

On July 7, 2010, Allen signed another contract with the Celtics, this time for 2 years and $ 20 million. In a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on February 10, 2011, Allen broke Reggie Miller's record (2560) for the most converted three-point throws by a player in NBA history.

Miami Heat (2012-2014)

After the 2011/12 season, Allen moved to the Miami Heat , where he signed a 3-year contract. In his first year with the Miami Heat, he won his second NBA championship. Allen equalized 5.2 seconds to go in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, and the game went into overtime after Miami fell five points with 28 seconds to go.
