Rodney King Thorn (born May 23, 1941 in Princeton, West Virginia ) is a retired American basketball player and manager. Thorn played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) between 1963 and 1971 with the Baltimore Bullets , Detroit Pistons , St. Louis Hawks and the Seattle SuperSonics . In 1964 he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team .

In the 1980s he was the general manager of the Chicago Bulls . In this role, he appointed Jerry Sloan to his first position as head coach of an NBA team and was responsible for ensuring that the Bulls in the 1984 NBA draft Michael Jordan selected.

From 1986 to 2000, Thorn was Vice President for Operations at the NBA. From 2000 to 2010, Thorn was the manager of the New Jersey Nets . He was named NBA Executive of the Year in the 2001-02 season . In 2010, Thorn took over the post of President of the Philadelphia 76ers . He held this post until 2012.

Thorn is considered to be one of the better managers in the NBA, who succeeds time and again in arranging clever player exchanges. On March 31, 2018, his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor was announced.
