Katherine May Smith (born June 4, 1974 in Lancaster , Ohio , United States ) is a former professional basketball player. The 1.80 meter tall Smith was mainly used in the position of shooting guard . On March 31, 2018, Smith's induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was announced.
Career
College (1992 to 1996)
Katie Smith played for the Ohio State University women's basketball team from 1992 to 1996 . On January 21, 2001, in honor of her achievements for the university, her jersey number was banned and will no longer be given to a player.
ABL (1996 to 1998)
Smith played for the Columbus Quest in the ABL after her time in college . During this time she won the ABL championship twice with the Quest. Since the ABL was dissolved after only 2 seasons, she had to end her career in the ABL involuntarily.
WNBA (1999 to 2013)
Katie Smith played for the Minnesota Lynx from 1999 to 2005 . During this time she reached the play-offs twice with the Lynx. On July 30, 2005, Smith was transferred to the Detroit Shock for a first-round pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft , including a second-round pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft. In the 2006 season she won the WNBA championship for the first time with the Shock. This makes her the first and only player to win an ABL and WNBA championship. After the 2007 season with the Shock just in the Finals to the Sacramento Monarchs failed, it could in the 2008 season with the Shock not only the second time the WNBA championship win, but they also became the WNBA Finals MVP Award elected . On March 16, 2010, Smith was signed by the Washington Mystics . A year later, on April 29, 2011, she was transferred to the Seattle Storm . She played for Storm in the 2011 and 2012 seasons . In her final season in the WNBA in 2013 , she played for New York Liberty .
After the 2013 season, she no longer played in the WNBA. Up to this point, she played in 15 WNBA seasons in the regular season 482 games, she was 439 May in the starting lineup and scored 6452 points, 1383 rebounds and 1258 assists. In 430 playoff games (40 of them in the starting line-up) she scored 550 points, 139 rebounds and 127 assists.
She was chosen for her achievements in the WNBA both in 2006 in the WNBA All-Decade Team consisting of ten players and in 2011 for the 15th anniversary of the league as one of the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time .
Europe (2001 to 2009)
During the WNBA season break, Smith played like many WNBA players in Europe. Since 2001 she has been on the field for teams from Poland and Turkey.
National team (1998 to 2008)
Smith won gold with the US national basketball team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . In addition, she was with the US team in 1998 and 2002 basketball world champion and won the 2006 World Cup bronze medal. In 2007 she also won the American Championship with the national team.
