Ruth Ellen Riley (born August 28, 1979 in Ransom , Kansas , United States ) is a former professional basketball player . Most recently she played for the Atlanta Dream in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). At the 2004 Olympics , she won the Olympic gold medal with the US women's selection .
Career
college
Ruth Riley played for the University of Notre Dame's women's basketball team in the NCAA until 2001 , with whom she won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in her senior year in 2001 , where she was named Most Outstanding Player . After four years, she ended her NCAA career with more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds .
WNBA
Riley was selected fifth in the 2001 WNBA Draft by the Miami Sol . In her first season she was able to secure a place in the starting line-up of Sol after just 12 games.
The day before the 2002 season started, she broke a finger, missing a few games due to an injury for the first time in her career. Since the Miami Sol stopped their game operations after this season, she was selected in the Dispersal Draft by the Detroit Shock .
In the 2003 season she was able to win a WNBA championship for the first time with the Shock. Because she had the best performance in the WNBA Finals, she was named Finals MVP . In the 2006 season , she won her second WNBA championship with the Detroit Shock. In February 2007 she was transferred to the San Antonio Silver Stars for Katie Feenstra , for whom she played until 2011. After playing for Chicago Sky in the WNBA in 2012 , she played another season for the Atlanta Dream in 2013 .
After that she was no longer active in the WNBA. Up to this point, she played in 13 WNBA seasons in the regular season 387 games, she was 262 times in the starting lineup and scored 2434 points, 1603 rebounds and 449 assists. In 52 playoff games (including 35 in the starting line-up) she scored 312 points, 193 rebounds and 69 assists.
Further club career
In addition to championships with the Colorado Chill in the National Women's Basketball League , Riley also played professionally in Europe. After working in Spain , Poland and Latvia , she won the EuroCup (formerly Ronchetti Cup ) with Athinaikos Athens in 2010 .
National team
Ruth Riley was also successful in the national jersey. She won the gold medal with the US national basketball team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens .
