Deanna Nicole Nolan (born August 25, 1979 in Flint , Michigan , United States ) is a professional basketball player. She last played in the Women's National Basketball Association in the 2009 season for the Detroit Shock team .
Career
college
Deanna Nolan played for the Lady Bulldogs, the University of Georgia women's basketball team, until 2001 . During her time in college, she won 86 of 98 games with the Lady Bulldogs.
Women's National Basketball Association
Nolan was selected sixth in the 2001 WNBA Draft by the Detroit Shock .
In the 2003 season she was able to win a WNBA championship for the first time with the Shock. In the 2006 season she made it to the finals with the Shock again, where she met the Sacramento Monarchs with the Shock . The Shock won the finals 3-2, which they owed mainly to Nolan, who had the best point and steal cut of all Shock players. Their achievements did not go unrewarded, as Nolan was named Finals MVP . After the 2009 season she ended her career in the WNBA to concentrate on her assignments in Europe. Up to this point, she played in 9 WNBA seasons in the regular season 293 games, while she was 266 May in the starting lineup and scored 3971 points, 1112 rebounds and 930 assists. In 48 playoff games (48 of them in the starting line-up) she scored 867 points, 210 rebounds and 161 assists.
Europe
Like many WNBA players, Nolan plays regularly in Europe during the WNBA season break. Since 2002 she has been on the field for teams from Italy, Spain, Israel, the Czech Republic and Russia. Since 2007 she has been playing for the Russian top team UGMK Yekaterinburg , since 2009 even exclusively.
National team
Nolan was not called up on the United States basketball team in 2008, despite her strong performances . Since she has also had Russian citizenship since 2007, there was still the opportunity to compete for the Russian national basketball team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . In addition to Nolan, Becky Hammon also tried to compete for Russia for the same reasons. The Russian national basketball team, which only one of the two could call up for the Olympic Games, decided in the end for Hammon.
“They (Russian officials) said if I don't go, it won't jeopardize me losing my (Russian) passport. I'm an alternate. Only one foreign player with a passport can play (per team in Olympics), and they want Becky Hammon, a point guard. I'd only play if she got hurt. "
“They (Russian officials) told me that if I don't compete (in the Olympics) it won't endanger my Russian citizenship. I am an alternative. Only one foreign player with a different citizenship can play (per nation at the Olympics) and they chose Becky Hammon, a point guard. I will only play if she is eliminated due to injury. "
