Reyer Venezia Mestre is an Italian basketball club from Venice . He was Italian basketball champion twice during the Second World War and won his third championship in the 2016/17 season after 74 years .
history
In 1872 the sports club Società Sportiva Costantino Reyer was founded, which in 1925 created a basketball department, Reyer Venezia. In the first few years, the club played in lower-class leagues before being promoted to Serie A , founded in 1920, in 1937 . In the premiere season they finished fifth, a play-off system was not installed in Serie A until the 1970s. In the following years until 1941 the club established itself in the league, always occupying a place in the table in the upper part of the table.
The last two seasons, before the league had to be interrupted because of the Second World War, were determined by Reyer. In 1942 and 1943 the club was each champion. Both titles were won after a close race against Virtus Bologna and a Roman team called Mussolini Roma . The first season after the end of the war was largely uncoordinated and only a few clubs were even able to provide a team. Reyer was runner-up behind Bologna this season.
In the following seasons, the game normalized again and Reyer always landed in the middle of the table before relegating in 1957 as eleventh-placed. There was another successful period between 1966 and 1974. During this time, the team was always in the first quarter of the table. In the 1980/81 season Reyer Veneza went to the Korać Cup , in which they advanced to the final. There they finally lost against Joventut de Badalona with a score of 104: 105. This was followed by relegations to the second-class A2 series , but followed again and again by promotions back to the top division. However, the club was no longer able to make it into the top group there. The 1993/94 season was the last in Serie A for a long time. It followed the crash into Serie C2 , the fifth division.
With the sponsor Umana from Luigi Brugnaro, who took over the club in 2006 with the aim of Serie A, he was promoted again in 2011 and won two championships in the 2016/17 and 2018/19 seasons. Reyer Venezia has played a total of 52 seasons in Serie A.
