Dominique Johnson (born June 9, 1987 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Johnson tried his hand at first as a professional in the NBA Development League before moving to Europe in 2013. With Śląsk Breslau, Johnson won the Polish Cup competition in 2014 and then played in Israel , Turkey and briefly in the basketball Bundesliga 2016/17 for the German club Alba Berlin. Johnson moved from Germany to Italy , where he initially played for the old masters from Varese before moving to Italian champions Reyer Venezia at the beginning of the 2017/18 season.

Career

Johnson grew up as the youngest child in a large family and graduated from Osborn High in the district of the same name on the "East Side" of his native city. He then lacked offers for an athletic scholarship from a full-fledged college and began studying at Southwestern Tennessee Community College in Memphis, Tennessee . This community college has a comparatively ambitious and successful college basketball team called Saluqis , who play in the TJCCAA or Region VII of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA). Johnson was able to come up with a high hit rate beyond the three-point line and in his second year in 2008 he was named "Player of the Year" at his Junior Conference and was appointed to the "2nd Team All-American" of the NJCAA. For further studies, however, Johnson went to Azusa Pacific University in Azusa , California . Their college teams Cougars played in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) of the NAIA , which is usually not ambitious enough for a player who is aiming for a professional career. Within the NAIA, however, Johnson was able to fully convince and won the championship of the Conference twice with his team and was selected as an All-GSAC among the best players in his Conference . In the national NAIA finals, the Cougars lost their opening game in 2009, but a year later the Cougars, with Johnson as the top scorer after 2005, made it into the NAIA final for the second time in their history, but after a half-time lead with one point difference under dramatic Circumstances 83:84 was lost to the bison of Oklahoma Baptist University . An appointment to the "All-American First Team" of the NAIA 2010 helped Johnson to be selected by the Idaho Stampede at least in the third round of the 2010 Entry Draft of the " Minor League " NBA Development League (D-League) after he in the 2010 NBA draft the doped world's highest professional league NBA in spite of two "workouts" Sacramento Kings was not considered.

After the Stampede Johnson did not take over in their season squad in 2010, Johnson signed his first professional contract at the beginning of 2011 with league competitor Legends from Frisco (Texas) , the farm team of the Dallas Mavericks . For the Texas Legends he still had 27 appearances in the season when the Legends reached the play-offs of the D-League and were defeated by the Tulsa 66ers in the first round . For the following season, Johnson was after the lockout before the start of the NBA season for a few days in mid-December in the squad of the Minnesota Timberwolves , before he had another 45 appearances in the D-League for the Texas Legends, which, however, with the same season balance as last year Missed play-offs this time. At the start of the pre-season training for the NBA 2012/13 , the Sacramento Kings brought Johnson back into their expanded squad, before Johnson returned to the Legends in early November, which, however, gave him in a player swap to the rivals Santa Cruz Warriors . After the Warriors released him from his contract without commitment, Johnson was free to sign a contract with the Charge , the farm team of the Cleveland Cavaliers , from Canton (Ohio) a few days later in early December . In the charge, however, Johnson's operating times and his point yield fell from more than twelve points per game to less than ten points per game in the D-League. Finally, the Charge released Johnson from his contract in mid-March 2013, who then had an assignment for the Skyforce from Sioux Falls , but which also released him from his obligations after a week.

After Johnson's efforts to get a contract in the lucrative NBA resulted in shorter and shorter engagements in the less lucrative D-League, he decided to move to " overseas " for the 2013/14 season and got a contract in Europe with the Polish record champions Śląsk from Wroclaw . This had just returned to the top division Tauron Basket League and reached ninth place with Johnson after promotion , which narrowly missed the play-offs for the championship title. The title win in the Polish Cup competition had been secured somewhat surprisingly with 90:87 in the final against the eventual champions Turów Zgorzelec . In the following season Johnson moved to league rivals Siarka Jezoro from Tarnobrzeg . Johnson was able to almost double his point yield to 23 points per game and in particular improved his hit rate from beyond the three-point line from 35% to over 50%, which is exceptionally good for a professional competition. Nevertheless, last year's eleventh slipped to the bottom of the table and Johnson moved to the Israeli league ha'Al to Maccabi from Rishon LeZion before the end of the season in February 2015 , before Siarka finally had to relegate as bottom of the table at the end of the season. In Israel, Johnson's team reached the play-offs in sixth place with a positive season record, in which they could defeat third Hapoel Holon in the first round , who was placed with the same season record only because of the direct comparison between several teams before Rishon LeZion. In the semifinals, however, Johnson's team from Rishon LeZion remained without a win against eventual title winner Hapoel Jerusalem . Then Johnson Israel and Rishon LeZion left, their team defeated defending champion Hapoel in the final game in the following season and won the championship title for the first time.

In the 2015/16 season, Johnson played in the Turkish basketball Süper Ligi at Banvit BK from Bandırma on the south coast of the Marmara Sea instead of Israel . Behind four Istanbul clubs from the north coast of the water, Banvit reached the play-offs for the Turkish championship in fifth place, as in the previous season. In the best-of-three series in the quarter-finals they remained without a win against Darüşşafaka Doğuş SK . In the international club competition Eurocup 2015/16 , they reached the second group stage level with the German representative FC Bayern Munich before ratiopharm Ulm , which was lost to the Italian record champions EA7 Armani Jeans Milan . For the following season, Johnson was finally signed by another German club and played for Alba Berlin at the beginning of the 2016/17 basketball Bundesliga , which had previously failed in the Eurocup round of 16 at Bayern Munich. In the EuroCup 2016/17 , which was modified because of the competition to the newly introduced 2016/17 Basketball Champions League , Alba reached the second group stage with Johnson, but Johnson reached an agreement with the German old champion, who started rather moderately in the national league, after only eleven appearances in the BBL an early move to Italy and switched to the former European Cup winners from Varese , who traded as openjobmetis that season . The Northern Italians were eliminated disappointingly early in the first season of the Champions League after only four wins in 14 games as the penultimate of their group and also missed the play-offs for the Italian championship as twelfth in the table in the Lega Basket Serie A by at least two wins.
