Bandırma (also Bandirma , Banderma and Panderma ; from ancient Greek Πάνορμος Κυζίκου Panormos ) is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ), created in 2012 . The city was called Panormos (Πάνορμος) in ancient times . Since a regional reform in 2012, the district town is identical in terms of area and population to the district.

Geographical location

Bandırma is located on the south bank of the Marmara Sea on the route between Izmir and Istanbul in the Bay of Bandırma.

Levent

The Levent district is located at the highest point in the city. In Levent, high-rise buildings and apartment blocks are mainly built. They became a kind of landmark of Bandırma, as you can see them from far outside the city.

Livatya

Livatya lies at the foot of the mountain on which Levent is located. Livatya is the eastern coast of Bandırma. In this area there is a savanna-like landscape with a few houses.

100.Yıl

The name of the district 100.Yıl literally means the hundredth year . It borders on Kayacık, another district of Bandırma. The sacrificial animal market takes place there at the Festival of Sacrifice (Bayram). The cemetery is at the end of the main street leading out of Bandırma.

Flora and fauna

The cityscape mainly includes palm trees. Otherwise fig trees and savanna-like areas characterize the landscape.

The Kuşcenneti National Park on Manyas Gölü (Manyas Lake) is probably the most important location for the animal world . It is used by many birds migrating to North Africa as winter quarters or as a resting place. Many species of birds can be found here, from birds of prey and songbirds to flamingos . In summer you can watch cormorants on the coast . Lizards, snakes and turtles are also common here, they mainly live in the stony landscape of Livatya and Levent. Dolphin schools can also be seen on the coast in summer.

economy

The city has numerous industrial settlements. Boron from Kırka is mainly exported across the Sea of ​​Marmara . The many chicken farms are well known.

traffic

Bandırma is on the route between Izmir and Istanbul. The city can be reached from Istanbul by high-speed ferry in around an hour and 45 minutes. There is a military airfield on the edge of the district town.

Sports

Bandırma has been represented with the basketball club Banvit BK since 2004 in the highest Turkish league, the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi . In the summer of 2011, Bandırma Kırmızı, the second basketball club from Bandırma, was promoted to the highest Turkish league.

With Bandırmaspor , the district town has had a football team since the 1960s that played for a long time in the second highest Turkish division of the TFF 1st Lig . Since the summer of 2010, the club has been taking part in the game in the third-highest division of the TFF 2nd Lig .
