Gömeç is a town in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . The city is located about 95 kilometers west of the center of Balıkesir on the Gulf of Edremit . Since a regional reform in 2012, the district town is identical in terms of area and population to the district.
Gömeç became a Belediye in 1913 , it was abolished in 1928 and in 1956 this status was given again.
The district is located in the southwest of the province on the southern bank of the Aegean Gulf of Edremit. It borders on Burhaniye to the north, Manisa Province to the southeast, Ayvalık to the south and the Aegean coast to the west. The city is on the European route 87 , which , coming from Edirne via Çanakkale , continues via İzmir and Denizli to Antalya . The island of Çiçek Adası off the coast belongs to the district .
