Dursunbey (formerly Balat , Greek Palátion ) is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . The city is located in the east of the province, about 80 km east of the center of Balıkesir . Since the regional reform in 2013, the district town has been identical in area and population to the district.
The region is mountainous. The highest mountain in the district is the Alaçam at 1,645 m . Large areas of the district are forested.
According to the city seal, the place was raised to a municipality in 1900 . The city was named "Dursunbey" in 1916 or 1918. Before that, it was called Balat (from the Greek Palátion for palace).
The family of the German national soccer player İlkay Gündoğan comes from Dursunbey. Gündoğan is still in close contact with his parents' hometown. He is involved here as a patron and partially finances various projects, e.g. B. the new stadium of the local football club Dursunbeyspor.
