Erdek ( Greek Αρτάκη Artaki , in antiquity Artake ) is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (city municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . Since a regional reform in 2012, the district town is identical in terms of area and population to the district.

It is the largest city on the Kapıdağ peninsula in the Sea of Marmara and a tourist destination with numerous hotels for holidaymakers from the surrounding area and from abroad. At the entrance to the city is the ancient city of Kyzikos . From here there are connections to Avşa Island and Marmara Island . Erdek is 120 km as the crow flies from Istanbul . The district is located in the north of the province, including the island of Paşalimanı Adası .

The Turkish Navy operates a base in Erdek .
