Manyas is a town in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . The city is located about 45 kilometers north of the center of Balıkesir . Since a regional reform in 2012, the district town is identical in terms of area and population to the district. According to the city logo, the place was raised to the rank of Belediye (municipality) in 1936 .

The district is in the north of the province. It borders in the southeast on Susurluk , in the south on the central district , in the southwest on Balya , in the west on Gönen and in the north on Bandırma . In the north, the district borders on Lake Manyas Gölü (also Kuş Gölü , German "bird lake"). The lake was declared a National Park Kuş Cenneti Milli Parkı in 1959 because of its biodiversity and the endangerment from industrial wastewater , but this could hardly prevent pollution, so that little of the former so-called bird paradise ( Turkish Kuş Cenneti ) has been preserved. About two kilometers north of the river Manyas Çayı (also Koca Çayı , Madras Deresi , Manyas Deresi or Kadıköy Deresi ) passes the city and flows into the lake.

On October 6, 1964, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Mercalli scale struck Manyas . 23 people were killed in the quake and several thousand buildings were badly damaged.

Attractions

In the northeast of the district, near the village of Ergili, only about two kilometers from the banks of the Manyas Gölü, lie the ruins of the ancient city of Daskyleion , which have been excavated for many years from 1988 under the direction of the Turkish archaeologist Tomris Bakır .
