Altıeylül (German: Sixth September ) is a district of the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi (large city municipality) Balıkesir . After the provincial capital was declared Büyükşehir belediyesi in 2012, the former central district was divided into two new İlçe, of which the southern Altıeylül is and the northern Karesi .
Altıeylül is bordered by Karesi to the north, Kepsut , Bigadiç and Sındırgı to the east, Manisa Province to the south and Savaştepe and İvrindi to the west . In the north, the southern half of the capital belongs to the district, roughly as far as the D-230 trunk road that crosses the city. From the urban area to the south, the D-565 trunk road leads to Manisa . The airport Balıkesir Merkez Havaalanı is located southeast of the urban area . The river Nergis Çayı flows from south to east through the district, it is dammed in the southeast to the İkizcetepeler Barajı .
The name Altıeylül refers to September 6, 1922, when Turkish troops recaptured Balıkesir from the Greeks in the War of Independence . The Belediye (municipality) was founded (according to the city logo) in 2014.
