Merkez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merkez is the Turkish word for middle, center. It refers to the city center (Şehir merkezi) or shopping centers. The main mosque of a city or district is also called Merkez Camii . Merkez is a loan word from Arabicمركز / markaz .

In the Turkish administrative division, the central district ( İlçe ) of a province ( İl ) , to which the provincial capital belongs, is called Merkez. In contrast to the other districts of the respective province, it does not have its own district administrator ( Kaymakam ) , but reports directly to the provincial governor ( Vali ). An exception are the 30 provinces, whose capital is a metropolitan commune (büyükşehir belediyesi) , which is divided into several İlçe. Some İlçe are in turn subdivided into Bucak , with the central Bucak, which surrounds the county seat, also known as merkez.
