Balıkesir (until 1926 Karesi , Greek Μπαλικεσίρ Mpalikesír ) is a Turkish city between Bursa and Izmir and the capital of the province of the same name Balıkesir . Since a regional reform in 2012, the city has been a Büyükşehir belediyesi (large city municipality) and is therefore identical to the province in terms of area and population. The central district of the same name was dissolved and divided into the new İlçe Altıeylül and Karesi . The name of the city is derived from the Greek Παλαιοκάστρον ( Palaiokastron , German: old castle).
The area is known for growing vegetables and fruits, and there are several well-known thermal baths in the area.
The ancient cities of Argyria ( Agissa , Argiza ), Skepticism and Ergasteria as well as Mount Ida , from which Zeus is said to have observed the battles for Troy , are in the vicinity . The ancient Makestos Bridge is on the route between Balıkesir and Miletopolis .
Balıkesir was for a time part of the Turkish Beyliks Karesi , later the Vilayet Karesi and was named as a province until 1926. This is where the historic mosque of Zaganos Pascha , built in 1461, is located . The nearby İkizcetepeler Dam was built in 1992.
Since November 2006 Balıkesir has been a twin town of the German city Schwäbisch Hall .
