Vilayet Karesi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vilâyet Karesi ( Turkish Karesi Vilâyeti , osm. Vilâyet-i Karesi ) was a short-lived Vilâyet of the Ottoman Empire . It existed from 1881 to 1888.

history

Through an administrative correction in 1881, the Sanjak Karesi (today Balikesir ), by splitting off from the Vilâyet Hüdavendigâr ( Bursa ), was raised to a Vilâyet. The capital of the Vilayets was also Karesi. The first governor ( Vali ) was Hamdi Paşazade Reşat Paşa, then came the second and last Vali Mehmet Atıf Bey.

The area around Biga (today Bigadiç ) was elevated to a sanjak. The adjacent Karesi had seven sub-districts ( Kaza ), the Sanjak of Biga four. In April 1888 the Vilâyet Karesi was dissolved and integrated into the Vilâyet Hüdavendigâr. The sandjak contained in the Vilâyet Hüdavendigâr was now ruled by a rumelier named Behçet Paşa.
