The Vilâyet Mamuretül-Aziz ( Ottoman ولايت معمورة العزيز Vilâyet-i Ma'mûretül'aziz ) was the Ottoman forerunner of today's Turkish province of Elazığ .

Originally the area was a sanjak of Eyâlet Diyarbakır with the center of Harput . Because Harput was well protected due to its location, but also difficult to access, the local governors moved their residence to the nearby but in the plain at the beginning of the 19th century small village of Mezere. The small town developed rapidly and was officially proposed as the seat of the local administration as early as 1834. The settlement (and in its wake the sanjak) was named Mamuretül-Aziz in 1862 in honor of the Sultan Abdülaziz . In 1879 the sanjak was promoted to vilayet.

In 1937 the name was officially changed to Elazığ according to the popular pronunciation .
