Vilayet Bitlis

The Bitlis Province or the Vilâyet of Bitlis , ( Armenian Բիթլիսի վիլայեթ ) was one of the Six Armenian Vilâyets of the Ottoman Empire and had a large Armenian population until the genocide of the Armenians in 1915 .

history

Bitlis was formed as an administrative province after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 . Previously it was part of the sanjak of Mus within the Vilayet of Erzurum.

In the years 1878 to 1879 the Vilâyet Bitlis had a population of 400,000 inhabitants, of whom 200,000 were Armenians.

In 1914 there were already 309,999 Muslims and only 117,492 Armenians.
