history

Settlement of Bitlis may date back to the Neolithic era, however there is no developed archeology in Bitlis. Bitlis first belonged to the Urartian Empire , then to the Medes and Persians . Alexander the Great had a castle built in the city of Bitlis and baptized the castle and the city in the name of Bedlis after a Macedonian commander. After Alexander and the Diadochian Empire , Bitlis fell to the Romans and remained under the rule of Byzantium until the 7th century . After the Turkish invasion , Bitlis fell to the Ayyubids and then to the Khorezm Shahs . Bitlis was also a victim of the Mongol invasions . In 1514 the province fell to the Ottomans . Since Bitlis was on the border between the Ottomans and the Persians, the Sultan granted the Kurdish rulers of the area extensive autonomy . A Kurdish dynasty was established in Bitlis, under which Bitlis experienced a cultural boom. In 1864 it was converted into the Vilâyet Bitlis , which was counted among the six Armenian Vilâyets ( Vilâyat-ı custom ) because of its high Armenian population . After the fall of the Ottomans and brief occupation by Russia , Bitlis fell to Turkey .
