Diyarbakır ( Ottoman دیاربکر Diyâr-i Bekr , German 'Land von Bekr' , Aramaic ܐܡܕ Amed orܐܡܝܕ Amid , Kurdish Amed ) is a province in southeastern Turkey , with the capital Diyarbakır . At the end of 2018, the province had 1,732,396 inhabitants on an area of 15,168 km². Neighboring provinces are Malatya , Elazığ , Bingöl , Muş , Batman , Mardin , Şanlıurfa and Adıyaman . Geographically, Diyarbakır is located in northern Mesopotamia and has a very long history.

geography

Diyarbakır is a province surrounded by mountains. Towards the middle there is a depression that runs from west to east and was largely formed by the Tigris . In the north is the Taurus , which separates the regions of Eastern Anatolia and Southeast Anatolia from each other. In the southwest, on the border with the province of Şanliurfa, lies the 1957 m high Karacadağ , an extinct volcano. Its solidified lava masses reach as far as the Tigris Depression.

The most important river in the province is the Tigris, which comes from Elazığ and flows through the province. It flows past the city of Diyarbakır and takes in other rivers before flowing south. In the northwest, a tributary of the Euphrates brushes the province. Several dams were built as part of the Southeast Anatolia project .

Administrative division

Diyarbakır has been a large city (Büyükşehir belediyesi ) since 1993 . In 2008 the central district ( Merkez ) was divided into the four new İlçe Bağlar , Kayapınar , Sur and Yenişehir . After an administrative reform in 2014 (after the local elections on March 30, 2014), all districts were directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Diyarbakır. The former mayors of the municipalities ( Belediye ) were downgraded to the rank of Muhtar . Thus, the 17 districts became urban districts at the same time:

population

The Kurds make up the majority of the population . The Kurds living here mostly speak Kurmanji . In the districts of Çermik , Çüngüş , Eğil , Dicle , Hani and parts of Lice , however, Zaza dominates . Of the tens of thousands of Christian Armenians and Arameans , only about 60 have lived in the provincial capital Diyarbakır since the massacres . The Christians live mainly in the Hançepek district ( popularly known as Gâvur Mahallesi , German unbeliever quarter ). Apart from this relatively small Christian minority in the provincial capital Diyarbakır and the Alevi Turks in Bismil County , all residents are Sunni Muslims. There was once a significant number of Yazidis who emigrated mostly to Western Europe.

Bismil also had a larger Turkish population until a few decades ago. Most of them have moved to major western cities since the late 1980s or early 1990s at the latest. The villages of Aralık , Bakacak , Eliaçık , Karamusa , Köseli , Recep , Türkmenhacı and Ulutürk in the vicinity of Bismil and Çermik still have a Turkish majority.

Results of the population extrapolation

In addition, (the population growth rate and gender relations are sex ratio , the number of women per 1,000 men mathematically determined d. H.) Listed. The 2011 census found 1,561,110 inhabitants, almost 200,000 more than in the 2000 census.
