Muhtar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A muhtar (from Arabic مختار, DMG muḫtār  'elected') is the head of a village community (village chief) in Turkey or a person with some state responsibilities in a district of a city (local chief). He is elected directly by the citizens of the village or the district. His term of office is five years.

Village Muhtar

The Muhtar takes on public administration tasks. This includes tasks of health , regulatory , civil status , building and residents registration . He settles disputes and observes public order. He is supported by a so-called council of elders ( ihtiyar heyeti ), to which elected members as well as the village school teacher and the local imam belong as "natural members".

The Muhtar in the village generally has more powers and duties than the Muhtar in a suburb of a city.

The Muhtar is subordinate to the Vali or the Kaymakam .
