Ergani ( Zazaisch Erğeni , Kurdish Erxenî ) is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Diyarbakır and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Diyarbakır (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 1993 . Ergani is located in the west of the province and borders the provinces of Şanlıurfa and Elazığ . After a regional reform, the district is identical in terms of population and area to the district town. The Ilçe was formed in 1926 and is the fourth most populous in the province. According to the city logo, Ergani was elevated to Belediye (municipality) as early as 1923 .
Probably Ergani is identical to the Assyrian Arqania, which is mentioned in an inscription Assur-nasir-pals .
About seven kilometers west of the city are the Stone Age Çayönü site and nearby are the Hilar Caves, an ancient rock necropolis.
