Location of Sur within Diyarbakır

Sur ( Kurdish : Sûr ) is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Diyarbakır and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Diyarbakır (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) in southeastern Turkey, created in 1993 . The name Sur comes from the Turkish word for city wall and refers to the fortifications of the old town.

According to the city logo, Sur received the status of a Belediye (municipality) in 1994

politics

The story of Sur is therefore identical to the story of Diyarbakır. The city of Diyarbakır was declared a metropolitan commune in December 1993 and received a lord mayor's office. At that time, mayor offices were established in the Sur and Yenişehir districts. In March 2008, the urban area of Diyarbakır was divided into four newly founded İlçe : Bağlar , Kayapınar , Yenişehir and Sur. The city as a whole no longer existed and no longer appeared in the statistics.

The total population of İlçe was 112,306 at the end of 2018, which corresponds to 6th place on the population ranking of the 17 İlçe. The four central city districts recorded a total of 1,069,893 inhabitants on 2,494 km²

In September 2016, incumbent mayors Seyid Narin and Fatma Şık Barut were replaced by a statutory order for allegedly supporting a terrorist organization by a state official. FF Buluttekin (HDP) won the local elections at the end of March with 60.67 percent of the valid votes.

Curfew in Sur from 2016

A curfew was imposed on Sur in December 2016, which was held until November 2017. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that Sur wanted to be renovated “like Toledo”.
