Şanlıurfa ( Arabic الرها, DMG ar-Ruhā , Kurdish Riha , Syriac ܐܘܪܗܝ Urhoy ) is a province in the Republic of Turkey . It is located in southeastern Anatolia and borders Syria in the south . Mardin Province is to the east, Gaziantep to the west, Adıyaman to the north and Diyarbakır to the northeast . In 2016 it had 1,940,627 inhabitants. The capital of the province is also called Şanlıurfa .
In 1983 the province and the capital, which until then were only called Urfa, were given the title şanlı (in German “glorious”). It is intended to commemorate the resistance against the French occupation in the Turkish war of liberation .
Counties
Şanlıurfa has been a large city ( Büyükşehir belediyesi ) since 2012 . After an administrative reform in 2014, all districts are directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Şanlıurfa. The former mayors of the municipalities ( Belediye ) were downgraded to the rank of Muhtar . The central district ( Merkez ) was divided into three new districts (Eyyübiye, Haliliye and Karaköprü) as part of the reform. All 13 rural districts are also urban districts:
