Gimek village in Bingol

Bingöl ( Kurdish Çewlig ; Zazaisch Çolig ) is a Turkish province in eastern Anatolia . It borders the provinces of Tunceli , Erzincan , Elazığ , Erzurum , Muş and Diyarbakır .

The provincial capital is also called Bingöl , but the old name is Çabakçur . The name Bingöl was supposedly given to the province because of the many lakes ( Bin göl Turkish for "thousand lakes"). In Zazaisch and Kurdish, Bingöl means Çolig / Çewlig , which means "garden / field by a river".

history

The province of Bingöl was under the rule of various empires, of which Urartu was the first known. The Assyrian king Ashurbanipal conquered Bingöl in 660 BC. In the 7th century BC Bingöl became part of the first Persian empire . The Persians were replaced by the Seleucids . 60 BC The Romans conquered the area from the Arsacids . In 395 Bingöl became part of the Byzantine Empire , which ruled here intermittently until the Arabs invaded in 651.

After the Islamization of the region, Turkish beyliks established themselves in the 13th century . One of them was the Rum Seljuks who consumed Bingöl in 1230. In 1243 the Ilkhans conquered the area after defeating the Rum Seljuks. The Ilkhan were followed by the Aq Qoyunlu and the Safavids . The Safavids were defeated by the Ottomans in 1515 . In 1844, Bingöl was part of the Vilayet Erzurum . In 1848, on the occasion of an administrative reform of another province, this time Diyarbakır, Bingöl was struck. Bingöl remained Ottoman until World War I , but came under Russian occupation in June 1916. The Russians withdrew in 1917. Bingöl became part of Turkey as part of the Vilâyets Genç . In the early years of the Turkish Republic, Bingöl was in the area of the Kurdish uprisings, e.g. B. the Sheikh Said uprising in 1925. By law, Bingöl became provincial capital and Genç district capital ( İlçe ) in January 1936 .

Administrative division

In 1881 the Vilâyet Bitlis was founded and the Çabakçur and Genç districts were incorporated there. Kiğı came to Erzincan and Karlıova to Mus . In 1936, Bingöl became an independent province and received its current form. The province has been officially called Bingöl since 1945 .

The province is divided into seven districts ( İlçe ) :
