Çatalkaya ( Turkish for fork rock ), ( Kurdish : Gimek or Gümek ) is a village in the Yayladere district of the Turkish province of Bingöl . Çatalkaya is located about 113 km northwest of the provincial capital Bingöl , 13 km north of Yayladere and 97 km northeast of Tunceli . According to the population update from the end of December 2008, Çatalkaya only had 7 inhabitants, but the number of inhabitants is now increasing again.

Çatalkaya used to be called Komik. This name is believed to be of Armenian origin. The village is on the provincial border with Tunceli . The villages of Altınhüseyin in Pülümür in the north, Kırköy in the east, Boğazköy in the south and Çalıkağıl in the west border Çatalkaya . The districts of Haksiyan, Zerkiyan, Kaldırma and Eski Gümek belong to the village. The former district of Aşuran has been an independent village as Boğazköy since the 1960s.

In the 1960s, an earthquake struck Bingöl that partially damaged the village. Due to the recruitment agreement between Turkey and Germany on guest workers , some residents went abroad to work. Most of the villagers moved to Istanbul in the late 1980s . Later the buildings in the village and the gardens were destroyed by the Turkish military in order to prevent the PKK from using the village. In the mid-2000s, a few families moved back to Çatalkaya and built new houses. Due to the relaxation of the military in the region, several families now want to return to the village. Many former residents now live in Germany, France and the Netherlands . As a result of the absence of humans and cattle for decades, forests of poplar, oak and walnut trees have expanded.

The cultural and solidarity association for the village of Çatalkaya (Turkish: Çatalkaya Köyü Kültür ve Dayanışma Derneği ) in Istanbul was founded by the former villagers and is based in the Kadıköy district .
