The Murat ( Turkish Murat Nehri , also Murat Suyu or Murat Irmağı ; Kurdish Çemê Miradê, Armenian Արածանի ( Aratsani ); Assyrian Arsania , ancient Arsanias ), also Eastern Euphrates , is a river in eastern Turkey .

It forms the eastern headwaters of the Euphrates and rises not far from Ararat in the mountain range north of Lake Van and south of the district town of Diyadin . Here are the source areas, the water of which has to cover the longest distance to the confluence with the Karasu to the Euphrates, namely around 720 km. From the spring it first flows east and then turns in a left curve to the north in a westerly direction. At Diyadin it reaches its easternmost section. From there it flows through mountainous terrain to the west. In the northeast of the province of Elazığ it reaches the Keban reservoir , where it joins the waters of the Karasu to the Euphrates.

history

The Murat is among other things in the annals of Shalmaneser III. mentioned.

Hydropower projects

In addition to the Alpaslan 1 dam and the Alpaslan 2 dam , which is currently under construction , there are other dam projects on the Murat river. The privately financed Beyhani Kaleköy hydropower project comprises four dams with attached storage power plants (Beyhan-1, Beyhan-2, Lower Kaleköy and Upper Kaleköy dams). The total capacity is 1855 MW, the expected annual electricity generation is 4280 GWh.
