The Karasu ( Turkish for "black water") also Western Euphrates is a river in eastern Turkey . In antiquity and the times of the Byzantine Empire it had the Greek name Τηλεβόας ( Telebóas ).

It forms the northern (right) source river of the Euphrates and rises at Dumlu Dağı , an offshoot of the Mescit Dağları , northeast of the provincial capital Erzurum and south of the district town Tortum . The water from these springs covers 470 km until it joins the Murat to the Euphrates. The Karasu flows first to the southwest towards the city of Erzurum, then through the valley landscapes of the provinces of Erzurum and Erzincan to the west. Then he describes a wide left curve to the south, to flow from the north-west into the Keban reservoir . Here it unites with the water of the Murat coming from the east to the Euphrates.
