The Keban Dam on the Upper Euphrates is a dam in Turkey . It is located about 70 km west of Elazığ in Eastern Anatolia and is used for power generation and irrigation.

The dam is 210 m, the highest in the Middle East and the reservoir is 31 billion cubic meters by content area and the second largest in Turkey after Ataturk Dam . The barrier structure is a gravity dam made of concrete in the middle part, which is combined with a dam made of loose rock material on the sides. The hydropower plant , which can generate 1330 MW (4 × 157.5 MW, 4 × 175 MW Francis turbines ), delivers 6,000 GWh of electricity annually. Electricity production began in 1974.

The late Roman Karamagara pointed arch bridge is one of the numerous ancient monuments sunk in the lake .

The Euphrates, called Fırat nehri in Turkish, is fed by its source river Karasu . This rises in the mountains near Erzurum , flows past Erzincan and flows into the reservoir from the north. The last tributary before the confluence is the Çaltı Suyu , which comes from the west via Divriği . The second source river of the Euphrates is the Murat , which has its source near the Ararat and flows into the reservoir from the east.

About 64 km below the Keban dam, the Euphrates is dammed by the Karakaya dam . The Karakaya Reservoir reaches almost to the foot of the Keban Dam.
