The reservoir is called al-Qadisiya , Buhayrat al-Qadisiya or Lake Qadisiyah . The dam , a structure made of loose earth material, was built between 1976 and 1986 by the Yugoslav company Hidrogradnja Sarajevo . The dam was occupied by US Army Rangers on April 1, 2003 during the Iraq War and has served as the headquarters for a Marines unit since then .

In 2004, the Gulf Region Division of the United States Army Corps of Engineers carried out repairs on one of the six turbines in order to achieve the full efficiency of the plant.
