Tortum is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Erzurum and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Erzurum (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 1993 . The Ilçe ranks seventh from last in the population statistics from (late) 1980.
The district of Tortum is located in the north of the province and borders with a small part on the province of Artvin , the nearest district towns are Uzundere in the north and Narman in the east. The Tortum Çayı flows north through the middle of the area. The river widens about 40 kilometers north of the city to the Tortum Gölü reservoir before it flows into the Oltu Çayı . The mountains, which rise steeply on the edge of the plain, reach heights of over 2500 meters.
The Ilçe is about 50 kilometers north of the center of Erzurum on the east bank of the river directly under one of the rocky mountains. The star-shaped streets from the wide square in front of the town hall form the compact business center. According to the city logo, Tortum was raised to the status of a municipality in 1927 .
Tortumkale is a fortress from Georgian times in the village of the same name, which can be reached from the junction from the main road about five kilometers north of the city after another six kilometers in a mountain valley to the west. A large bastion may date from the 19th century. The outer walls run irregularly along the top of an isolated hill. Partial restoration began in 1978.
