Karaçoban ( Turkish for black shepherd ; Kurdish Qereçoban ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Erzurum .
population
Karaçoban was an Armenian place until the beginning of the 20th century . Today Kurds make up the majority of the population in Karaçoban. In addition, some Turks from Central Anatolia and the Ordu Province who settled in the 1930s also live here . Ossetians also live in the village of Budaklı and the Güvendik district .
geography
The district is located in eastern Anatolia and is close to Lake Van . Karaçoban is 182 km from the city of Erzurum . It is bordered by Hınıs County to the west and Karayazı to the north .
Karaçoban is divided into the following 9 districts: Akarsu Mahallesi , Bağlar Mahallesi , Bahçeli Mahallesi , Erhanlar Mahallesi , Güvendik Mahallesi , Hacılar Mahallesi , Kavaklı Mahallesi , Sarıveli Mahallesi and Seyhan Mahallesi .
This includes the following 19 villages: Akkayak , Binpınar , Bozyer , Budakli , Burnaz , Çatalgül , Dedeören , Doğanbey , Duman , Erenler , Gündüzköy , Karagöz , Karaköprü , Carmi , Kırımkaya , Kuşluca , Marufköy , Molladavut and Ovayoncalı .

In 1964 a small administrative center was established. Alican Kocakaya ( CHP ), born in Hinis in 1949, is head of Karaçoban's administration.
