history

Oltu was under the name Oltisi ( Georgian ოლთისი ) in the 9th and 10th centuries part of the Georgian Kingdom of Tao-Klardschetien , from 1001 of the Kingdom of Georgia . After the Seljuq invasion , it became part of the Turkish Saltukid Beylik in 1080 . The Rum Seljuks followed the Saltukids . These were followed by other Mongolian and Turkish rulers. Oltu later became part of the Ottoman Empire and remained so until the Peace of San Stefano in 1878. Oltu changed hands and was part of the Kars Oblast until 1917 . After the turmoil of the October Revolution , Oltu was left to the Armenians. A little later, Muslim militias were formed who sought to incorporate Oltu into Turkey. The Oltu conflict sparked the Turkish-Armenian war . At the end of the war, Oltu became part of Turkey, received the status of a Belediye (municipality) in 1923 and became an independent district in 1926.
