Hınıs ( Zaza Xınıs , Kurdish خنووس Xinûs , Armenian Խնուս Chnus ) is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Erzurum and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Erzurum (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 1993 . The name is derived from the Arabic word for Hisn castle . The date of construction of that castle is not clear. According to Evliya Çelebi , it was built by an uncle of the ruler Uzun Hasan . Hınıs is located in the south of the Aras Mountains between Muş and Erzurum and, according to the city logo, received the status of a municipality in 1925 .
