Garsitz is a district of Königsee in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .
location
The place is located in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park in the upper foothills of the Rinnetal southwest of the main town Königsee. Garsitz is traversed by the small river Rinne , which rises about three kilometers from Garsitz.
Attractions
To the west of Garsitz there are natural monuments: The Great Querlichsloch (Bärenkeller), the Wildpferdehöhle, the Dachshöhle, the Höhlenbäreneckfelsen and the monk's chapel. Various animal bones from wild horses, saiga antelopes and cave bears as well as cultural legacies of the past in the period between the 13th and around 8th millennium BC were found near or in them. Found dated to the end of the Paleolithic.
The most famous building in the village is the bell tower. The “Gebörne” rises above Garsitz and, in addition to several caves (e.g. Bärenkeller), also houses one of the oldest Zechstein reefs in Germany. Also on the Gebörne is the information trail "Naturally Königsee", which explains interesting historical and scientific facts.
history
The village was first mentioned in 1289 under the name Garschitz . The district of Königsee has the second largest population of the districts. The area of the small village is 228 hectares. Until 1918, the place belonged to the sovereignty of the principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen .
