Location of Königsee in Thuringia

Königsee is a district of the town of the same name Königsee in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia .

geography

View of Königsee from the direction of Dörnfeld

Königsee lies at an altitude of 377 meters above sea level in a side valley of the Schwarza Valley, on the northeast slope of the Thuringian Forest . There is also the geological dividing line between the Zechstein belt in the south and the Buntsandstein in the north. The “Königseer Stadtwald” , which begins steeply north of Königsee and is almost entirely wooded, is part of the Rinne and Rottenbachtal nature reserve and is an essential part of the Paulinzella red sandstone region, which separates the catchment area of the Rinnetal from the Ilm valley. Königsee lies in the valley of the Rinne.

climate

The climatic conditions in the protected valley of Königsee differ fundamentally from the mountain ranges, mountains and surrounding villages surrounding the city. Different wind and precipitation conditions are primarily responsible for this. The mean annual rainfall for Königsee is 618 millimeters, which corresponds to 618 liters per square meter per year. The average annual temperature is 7.5 ° C with a prevailing wind direction from southwest to west.

history

The town of Königsee was first mentioned as Kunegesse in 1198 and was mentioned in a document in 1257, the town charter was confirmed in 1365. The city received by Günther XXXII. von Schwarzburg (noble family) various privileges and was the mint of the Schwarzburg counts. The town council, mentioned in 1342, held the lower jurisdiction . In 1447 the city, fortified by walls and towers, was completely destroyed in the Blackburg Brothers' War and then rebuilt. In the 15th and 16th centuries there was intensive mining in Königsee and iron, silver, copper and lead were mined. In the Thirty Years War Königsee was looted and burned down in 1635. From the 17th century onwards, the town's economy was characterized in particular by the oil trade and shoemaking.

Königsee belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt until 1918 . Since 1668 the place had been the seat of the Schwarzburg “Amt Königsee” of the same name, from 1850 to 1922 of the Königsee District Office .

Due to the general economic development of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and the prohibition of the Olitätenhandel in the 19th century, there was an economic decline and increased emigration to America. Later, in addition to the leather and shoe factories, an important porcelain and tool industry developed on site. These branches of business were continued and expanded during the GDR era. The Königsee part of the VEB MLW Medizintechnik Suhl was a major manufacturer of surgical instruments. Garsitz and Unterschöbling were incorporated in 1950 and Lichta in 1974 .

Buildings

The city hall

The town hall is on the B 88 (which bends around the town hall there). In the foyer the tower clock of the town hall, built around 1710 by an unknown craftsman, is on display. The piece from the Baroque era consists of a hand-forged frame, a brass hour wheel and wooden drum drums. It is 1.42 meters high (with pendulum 2.40), 1.45 meters wide (with hammer 2.28) and 87 centimeters deep. It weighs 200 kilograms. The original one-hand movement was probably converted to a minute display at the end of the 18th century. The weights were pulled up using a hand crank. The tower clockwork was restored about 20 years ago, but it is worn in many places; it was no longer possible to restore the clock. In 1970 it was replaced by a new clockwork and was stored in the town hall for a few years. In the mid-1970s it was bought and exhibited by the Dresden Mathematical-Physical Salon in the Dresden Zwinger . In the spring of 2006 the movement returned to Königsee on permanent loan .

The largest twist drill made by the Königseer Werkzeugfabrik Werkö has been standing in front of the town hall since August 2006 . With a weight of 88 kilograms, a length of 2.2 meters and a diameter of 96 millimeters, it is possibly the largest twist drill in the world, an application for an entry in the Guinness Book of Records has been submitted.

The city church for the praise of God is built in the neo-Gothic style. The building was inaugurated after five years of construction in 1871 after the previous town church had become dilapidated. The Friedenskirche , a half-timbered church from 1711, is another historic church building in Königsee.

Remains of the medieval city fortifications can still be seen.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Königsee is located on federal highway 88 , which connects Ilmenau with Rudolstadt . Other roads lead from Königsee to Garsitz , Dröbischau (L2389) and Unterschöbling or Lichta (K130). The L1113 begins in the Unterköditz district and leads via Allendorf to Schwarzburg in the Schwarzatal .

In 1899 Königsee got a railway connection via Köditzberg to Rottenbach in the east. There was a connection to Erfurt , Saalfeld and Katzhütte in the Schwarzatal. This route was 6.9 kilometers long and was closed on August 1, 1966 for passenger and December 31, 1972 for goods traffic. Only the station building still bears witness to the former route.
