Jens-Uwe Penzel (* 14. November 1964 in Königsee , Thuringia ) is a former Thuringian soccer player with FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the DDR-Oberliga , the top division of the East German Football Association and in the 2. Bundesliga played . In 1984 he played two international youth games for the GDR.

Career as a soccer player

DDR-Oberliga

The 13-year-old Penzel came from BSG Stahl Maxhütte to the Thuringian top club FC Carl Zeiss Jena in 1978. Having outgrown the junior age, he was used in the junior league team from 1982 and, after its dissolution in 1983/84, integrated into the squad of the second team, which competed in the third-class district league Gera . With her, Penzel won promotion to the GDR league in 1984 . At the same time, he completed his apprenticeship as a precision mechanic.

Already in the 1983/84 season Penzel completed his first games in the Bundesliga team of FC Carl Zeiss. He played the first league game on November 5, 1983. In the match on the 9th day of the match between FC Carl Zeiss and Stahl Riesa (4: 6), he was substituted on at the second half. In six other league games this season he was in the starting line-up as a left defender. He was also used in May and July 1984 in two internationals of the GDR youth national team. In Jena, it took until the 1986/87 season for the 1.80 m tall Penzel to gain a foothold in the regular team. After he had only played a total of 14 league games in the past three seasons, he was used 24 times in the 26 league games in 1986/87 and also scored his first two league goals. Coach Lothar Kurbjuweit used Penzel both in midfield and in defense. In the following seasons, however, Penzel found his regular place in the defense, initially on the left, later as a stopper . As a left defender, Penzel was on June 4, 1988 in the final of the GDR soccer cup, but Jena lost 2-0 in extra time against BFC Dynamo. When FC Carl Zeiss Jena had to qualify for professional football in 1990/91, Penzel helped secure a place in the 2nd Bundesliga with 20 stakes in the game.

2nd Bundesliga

In his first season in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1991/92, he initially had no adjustment problems in professional football. By the winter break he played 20 of the 22 point games played, but after that he was only used in the first two games of the second half of the season. Coach Klaus Schlappner had used him as a striker in most of the games . In 1992/93 Penzel was only able to intervene in the championship again from the 24th matchday on. Now playing in midfield, he only made nine appearances this season. In the 1993/94 season he played 21 of the 38 second division games, alternately in defense and midfield. At the end of the season he was relegated to the regional league with Jena . Meanwhile, at the age of 30, he lost his regular place in the team and was only used in 12 of the 34 point games, although he was only six times in the starting eleven. FC Carl Zeiss managed to return to the 2nd Bundesliga immediately. In 1995/96 and 1996/97 Penzel was no longer part of the player base. In 1995/96 he played 15 games, only three of them as a midfielder over 90 minutes, in 1996/97 he was called up five times as a substitute. Penzel played his last game for FC Carl Zeiss Jena on June 11, 1997 in the league game VfB Leipzig - FC Carl Zeiss Jena (3: 3), as a substitute in the last 18 minutes.

For the first team of FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Penzel was represented in 14 seasons from 1983 to 1997. During this period he played 243 competitive games (eight goals):

In the summer of 1997 Penzel joined the Thuringian league club VfB 09 Pößneck , with whom he rose to the amateur league in 2002. In the 2003/04 season he played a few point games for the 2nd team of FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the Thuringian League .
