Course of the game
After winning the tenth championship in a row but four defeats in the final between 1979 and 1985, the Berlin FC Dynamo wanted to finally win the cup and at the same time win the double of the championship and the cup. Against the sixth of the last league season 1987/88 FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Berlin went into the game as the clear favorite.
In the encounter, which was characterized by tactical finesse, the master was unable to bring his advantages to bear for a long time. The BFC found it surprisingly difficult against the Thuringians, who were mainly closed in the first half and with a good floor plan. The game of Jena was initially more flexible, the midfielders were fully on the offensive. Although the Berlin line-up with striker Ernst in midfield was oriented towards attacking football, the BFC players approached the game very cautiously in the early stages. Since the defenders began to have difficulty orienting themselves, the Zeiss townspeople opened up their first chances to score. Jena's striker Lesser was already free in the 16th minute in front of the BFC goalkeeper Rudwaleit, but pulled the ball. It was only in the 22nd minute that Ernst had the first good goal opportunity, which was only prevented by an emergency brake. Up until the break, it was FC Carl Zeiss that determined the game.
After the break, it took another quarter of an hour before the BFC gave a sign of life with a dangerous ambush shot by its left winger Thom. But this was also the signal to take over. While the Jena players already had to pay tribute to their high pace, the Berliners got upper water, both visually and in the number of scoring chances. Goals did not fall until the 90th minute, because the Jena defense was still solid. However, she was lucky when BFC center forward Pastor couldn't get the ball under control in the last minute of regular time in a favorable shooting position.
Even in the 30-minute extension, both teams struggled in vain for a decision for a long time. Twice the Jenaer had the opportunity to score a goal with pride and Böger. Zeiss coach Kurbjuweit was the first to change players when he sent Burow onto the pitch for Lesser in the 110th minute. But two minutes later the BFC made it 1-0 when, after a rebound from the Jena defense, a surprise landed at the free-standing Doll, who had no trouble finishing. Two minutes after being substituted on, Michael Schulz scored the decisive 2-0 for BFC in the 115th minute.
