FDGB Cup 1956
The sixth edition of the FDGB soccer cup competition began in 1956 with 148 teams. Due to the changeover from the football season to the calendar year, the final did not take place until the end of the year. There were two qualifying rounds and two main rounds before it came to the cup final via the eighth, quarter and semi-finals. All rounds were played in the knockout system. After a draw they went into extra time, if there was still no winner then there was a replay.
120 quarter-finalists of the GDR district cup competitions, which were joined for the first time by the 28 representatives of the newly founded GDR League II in 1955, went into the qualification . This field had been reduced to 36 teams after the second qualifying round, which in the first main round met the 14 representatives of the first GDR league and the upper league , the highest football class.
No teams from the districts or the II. GDR League were represented in the round of 16. The top division clubs Rotation Babelsberg , Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt , SC Rotation Leipzig and Motor Zwickau had to cancel their flags. With Chemie Wolfen , Chemie Halle-Leuna and Chemie Zeitz , three second division teams reached the quarter-finals , of which only Halle was able to prevail with a 4-3 after extra time against activist Brieske-Senftenberg . In the semifinals, too, the Halle team gave their opponent Turbine Erfurt a tough fight. They went into extra time again and held 1: 1 in Erfurt, then sensationally won 5: 0 in the second leg. Their opponent in the final was ZASK Vorwärts Berlin , who had thrown the cup defender and newly crowned GDR champion SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt 2-0 out of the race.

Course of the game
After Unity Pankow (1952/53), a second division team was involved for the second time in the sixth final for the FDGB Cup with SC Chemie Halle-Leuna. However, the Halle had ended the past season 1956 as a climber in the league. The opponent ZASK Vorwärts Berlin had finished the league season as sixth in the table. Since the East Berliners called up six current national players, they went into the game as the clear favorite. On the other hand, the Halle residents had to bear the handicap that they had to play an extra time in the semi-finals only seven or four days ago and then a replay against the league club SC Turbine Erfurt.
It took a quarter of an hour for SC Chemie to find its rhythm. Until then, the Berliners determined the action, fought for two corner balls, but they could not be used. Halles half-left Walter Schmidt then took the initiative and cranked his team's offensive. One after the other, Lehmann, Lehrmann and Imhof showed up dangerously in front of the Berliner Tor, causing confusion with constant changes of position. This was successful, because in the 18th minute, the opening goal fell for Chemie. Halle's right wing Jaukus had lured Eilitz out of cover, outplayed him and was able to pass on his center forward Lehmann. Berlin goalkeeper Spickenagel missed a cross to Büchner, whose shot first hit the post, but then spun into the empty goal.
As the playing time increased, the weaknesses of the Berlin play system became apparent. Although the actors were technically well-versed and showed some remarkable moves, they were too hesitant on the way to the opposing goal. In addition, the strikers got bogged down in individual actions, several times overlooked the better positioned neighbor. Center forward Gerhard Reichelt played completely out of shape and was the weak point in the forward team. If the strikers came up with opportunities to shoot, they failed because of the excellent goalkeeper Melchior.
The second half began with a shot from the post by Halle's Lehrmann, a little later the Berliners Meyer, Unger and Assmy had good chances to score, but they were all awarded. Then forward coach Gyarmati decided in the 59th minute to replace the still disappointing Reichelt with Siegfried Wachtel. This measure visibly animated the game of Berlin, but it took until the 73rd minute before a countable success jumped out. The starting point was the substitute Wachtel, whose flank Kaulmann was able to use to equalize 1: 1. The SC Chemie was not impressed by this. His players, again driven by Walter Schmidt, mobilized the last reserves of strength, on the other hand, the forward players surprisingly showed physical weaknesses. The decisive winning goal for the outsider SC Chemie Halle-Leuna was consequently scored in the 84th minute. Marotzke was able to fend off a sharp shot from Lehmann to the corner in dire need. Spickenagel missed the corner kick and Imhof was there with a headbutt that was worth seeing.
Comment by chemistry trainer Horst Sockoll: "I would not have believed myself that the boys would still have such reserves, but the spirit and the will won."
