Via the stations SG Wülknitz / Lichtensee, SG Koselitz and VP Readiness Leipzig II, the young player, who mostly played on the left wing position, came to SK Vorwärts Leipzig at the age of 20 for the 1951/52 round and gained his first experience in the top division. Since he only made twelve championship appearances in two rounds, he made two steps back in the 1953/54 season and moved to BSG Motor West Karl-Marx-Stadt , which played in the third highest division, the district league. He celebrated the championship and promotion to the GDR league, but followed the call of BSG Motor Zwickau and thus got back into the league for the 1954/55 round. With the team of coach Erich Dietel, he finished fifth in the table. The inconspicuous but effective midfielder played all 26 league games of the round. At the age of 23 he made his debut on October 24, 1954 in Sofia in the international match against Bulgaria in the GDR national soccer team . After the transition round in 1955, he moved to the red and yellow of ASK Vorwärts Berlin and then played there from 1956 to 1968. For Vorwärts, he completed 270 league games and also played 15 appearances in the European Cup .

When he first won the championship in 1958, Unger was already the captain of coach Kurt Fritzsche's team and made 26 appearances in the league. The offensive quality of the attack with Horst Assmy , Rolf Fritzsche , Gerhard Vogt , Lothar Meyer and Günther Wirth contributed significantly to winning the championship. When in 1960 the second title win with coach Harald Seeger followed, "Peitsche" played 20 games in the major league, the 19-year-old talent Jürgen Nöldner played in the foreground. As a veteran he experienced the other three championships in 1962, 1965 and 1966. In the 1965/66 round, the ASK Vorwärts passed autumn champions FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the final sprint . Werner Unger played 22 championship games for coach Günter Lammich's team alongside Horst Begerad , Werner Krampe , Otto Fräßdorf , Jürgen Nöldner and Gerhard Vogt despite his 35 years of experience. At the age of 37, he ended his active playing career in the GDR league in 1968 and said goodbye to the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark .

Selection games, 1954 to 1964

After his debut in the national team in 1954, still playing for BSG Motor Zwickau, it took almost four years before the second assignment came about. On June 29, 1958 in a 1-1 draw against Poland, he was called back to the national team as an active member of ASK Vorwärts Berlin. He played his seventh game in a 12-1 record win on January 12, 1964 in Colombo against Sri Lanka. This was his last game in the A-national soccer team of the GDR. With the B national team, he played eleven games for the DFV from 1957 to 1963. He was also in action for the GDR's soccer team. He was also active in the German-German qualifying games in 1959 and 1963. When the GDR prevailed against the DFB amateurs trained by Helmut Schön in 1963 , he also played in the qualifying games against the Netherlands and the Soviet Union. In the 1964 Olympic soccer tournament in Tokyo, he was only used in the group game against Mexico on October 15 in Yokohama, but he was one of the bronze medal winners of the DFV team.

On November 16, 1964, Werner Unger was honored with the honor of "Honored Master of Sports".
