GDR football league 1964/65

The GDR Oberliga 1965/66 was the 17th edition of the top division in the GDR . It began on August 14, 1965 and ended on May 14, 1966. The team from Vorwärts Berlin became champions for the fifth time . This season was shaped by the establishment of football clubs based on the sports club sections.

Formation of football clubs

A few weeks before the renaming: SC Leipzig against SC Empor Rostock.

In order to promote the development of football in a more targeted manner, the DTSB decided in 1965 to form independent football clubs , for which purpose the football departments were separated from the sports clubs. With the exception of TSC Berlin , all sports club sections whose first teams did not belong to the upper league at the time were excluded from this measure. The affected SC teams from Potsdam , Cottbus , Neubrandenburg and Dresden thus lost their previous sponsorship status as future BSG teams. While the former districts no longer had a football performance center, the Dresden district was now represented by SG Dynamo Dresden, which was never a sports club in terms of its name, but had always received the same funding as the football focus center of the Dynamo sports association .

Due to these changes, there were various renaming in the leagues during the season. In the league, the team names changed as follows.

Season course

Jürgen Nöldner scored the 1-0 against Jena on the last day of the match.

The decision for the championship title resulted in a proverbial championship final, when on the last day of the table the first in the table Carl Zeiss Jena traveled to the second in the table, Vorwärts Berlin. In front of 30,000 spectators in the local Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark , the forward team won 2-0 and thus defended the title from the previous year. The team from Jena, on the other hand, which was in first place in the table for almost the entire second half of the season, had to be content with second place behind Vorwärts, as in the previous season.

Behind Berlin and Jena, Lokomotive Leipzig and Hansa Rostock placed themselves in the top five for the third (Lok) and fifth time (Hansa) in a row. The 1964 champion Chemie Leipzig did not have a good season and was even close to the relegation ranks in the first half of the season. In the end they came in eighth, but the “chemists” were able to win the FDGB cup .

The relegation was decided on the penultimate matchday. Surprisingly, the cup winners of 1964 and 1965 Magdeburg and last year's climber Erfurt, who was almost continuously on a relegation zone, had to return to the league. The other newcomer Halle ended up in eleventh place. As the best BSG, Wismut Aue finished sixth after Wismut was in last place for a long time in the preliminary round.

    FDGB Cup

The FDGB Cup was won by Chemie Leipzig this season . In the final, which took place during the current league season, the Leipziger defeated the league competitor Lokomotive Stendal 1-0. The cup defender Magdeburg failed in the quarterfinals.

    International competitions

For the teams of the GDR, English club teams meant the end of the European Cup this season . Forward Berlin was defeated in the European Cup by the national champions Manchester United , Magdeburg in the European Cup Winners' Cup only in the quarter-finals (then already as 1. FC ) West Ham United and the SC Leipzig in the Messestädte-Pokal Leeds United . In the International Football Cup, on the other hand, the East German teams played again successfully. The four GDR representatives SC Leipzig, Motor Jena, Empor Rostock and Chemie Leipzig all reached the quarter-finals, the two Leipzig clubs then faced each other in the semi-finals. In the semi-final first leg, the city rivals drew 1: 1. The second leg was won by SC Leipzig, now renamed 1. FC Lokomotive, 1-0. Both games took place in the central stadium in front of 10,000 and 30,000 spectators respectively. In the final, Lok won the first international title for the GDR against IFK Norrköping (albeit a subordinate one compared to the other three competitions).
